Hallowitchy

Well, more comic book-y (especially indie comic book-y with the dark inks). Thought it was apropos. Happy Halloween!

Rizal

I was experimenting with the Webster brushes and less high rez canvases, and I was sketching the outfit I wore earlier this evening for dinner. The face I painted looks to me like a modern day Jose Rizal, the national hero of the Philippines (hence the title).

Fab Fatigues

The de rigueur modern outfit for young hipsters will often include an element like a fatigue coat. I saw this group of super well dressed girls and a guy pass me by earlier this evening, and I loved how clean and composed their outfits were. The guy in particular was immaculate: a khaki jacket over a longer khaki shirt in almost exactly the same color, over lean fatigue pants finished off with bright peachy-orange leather high tops. (edit: I found out they're actually yellow ochre rubber Converse, new this season)

I was too busy trying to enter a contest by midnight that I forgot to post this on time, but this is the drawing for 10.29.14.

Surf On Turf 9

Continuing Project Thaddeus. I had to get this kid's features more closely before I could paint this properly.

Strange!

Dr.Strange was always one of my favorite Marvel super heroes - I was always attracted to magic and the occult, and he was always offbeat but still super-heroic. One of the things I recall most is the Steve Ditko-esque power manifestations that artists like Paul Smith and Marshall Rogers would give him, with odd 3D shapes that didn't just show up as bolts of energy, because any super hero could do that!

Anyhow, this is a bit of a tribute to the good doctor, who just found the actor to portray him: fabulous actor and fan fave Benedict Cumberbatch has been reported as the new Dr and I couldn't be more pleased!

Raincoat

I was inspired by a painting I saw posted on Facebook, and I used the colors in it as a starting point for a painting. But I didn't really have any plan, so I just painted whatever came to mind and hand, and this rather 70s looking fashion illustration is the result. Although I do like it!

Meg and her friend Heron

Meg and her friend Heron finally caught the boys, who  - as you can see by all the footprints -  had to be chased all over the beach to get them to pose for the photo.

Surf On Turf 8

This should've been titled Surf Tribe 2, but I think I'm just putting all these Thaddeus sketches under this title. Gonna have to go back into this and clarify the pattern, but I like it thus far.

Damper of Day

Not only was it a wet, rainy day all day, but now we get the news of the first case of Ebola in NYC. Will this be the beginning of the end? Will I look back on this day as the day when all hell broke loose? Or will it be a day we look back on fondly as the one where we worried needlessly? Oy, I hope it's the latter.

Drawn Away

I went to the Erotic Drawing Salon for the first time in a while earlier tonight, hoping to get some good drawings done. But between the model I wasn't into, the trite cowboy theme and the assault of vintage country music that went along with it, I was so disgruntled I just paid my fee and left less than halfway through. I felt like even if I got some good drawings, I disliked the subject matter so much I wouldn't have liked them at all. And man, I couldn't stand the music. Add the fact that it was raining and a chore to get there, I'd say this evening was a bust.

Surt On Turf 7

Changes to the profile aren't so much minor as they are minute, but they do make it look more like the model. Or so I keep insisting to myself as I draw.

Surf On Turf 6

There'll always be a profile sketch in one of these things, methinks. I always did like a good profile.

Annoyed In Neon

Was working on an email design shoved my way last minute, so I was a bit preoccupied. So I squiggled something out quickly, but it's till too late for Sunday's entry. I'm annoyed with myself for not being aware. Grr.

Erwin

Doing a series of portraits and this very first one is of my oldest friend in the world, Erwin. We've known each other for decades now. I wanted to start this series with him since I've known him the longest.

Holidazed

A regular design client I have asks me very year to design non-denominational holiday cards. After a few years you can run out of viable themes! So I'm going back to the well of cards that didn't get chosen in years past, and updating an old image. Maybe they'll want a teddy bear this year!

Surf On Turf 5

Another pose to work into the layout...

Trever 6 (done, I think)

I seem to be going for a bit more finished, but a lot rougher rendering. Sigh, I can never recall what I'm supposed to be painting like sometimes...

Zenaida in Light Wash

I realized I hadn't drawn my goddess of the rice in a while!

Surf Tribe

Setting up more sketches for my illustreportage series from a recent SS15 menswear show.

Trever 5

I always tell myself I will strive for a good drawing but not sweat the likeness. Well, apparently I keep lying to myself, because I always worry about a likeness when I do things digitally and can keep adjusting it. But it makes for a better drawing (I hope).

Trever 4

I wasn't happy with the likeness nor with the pose proportions in yesterday's sketch, but I knew I needed to walk away from it and come back with fresh eyes later. I was following the photo I took very closely and I didn't tweak it to be more fashion when I did the first sketch. I revamped and lengthened the pose much more with this version, but I'm only showing the updated face, which I think looks nice.

Trever 3

I decided I didn't really like the last outfit he had on but fortunately the one he was wearing today was really interesting. This is my Trever reboot.

Surf On Turf 4

I couldn't leave it alone. The rendering was bugging me. I edited the watercolors down and I like this lighter version better. Although for some reason it keeps showing up darker once I export the jpeg... strangeness.

Surf On Turf 3

I'm a bit torn with this piece, as I simultaneously believe I am finishing it too much, and also not enough. But I suppose since I'm doing a series that I should see how it looks compared to the other sketches I plan on incorporating in a layout. So I'll post thi for now as there's no guarantee this will be the final render for this particular pose.

Alexander 2

I'm totally starting over again with this portrait.

Surf On Turf 2

One of the reasons I chose the pose I did was I loved the abs on this particular model... not that you can see, but I also liked the pose. The pose with the abs.

Eep!

I had the blogger window open and everything...but I didn't have anything in mind to draw! So I forgot to enter it in time, and the fact of forgetting became the inspiration for the sketch to post (awful as it is).

Surf On Turf

Continuing my Illustreportage on one of the shows from the SS15 NY menswear shows. This one was all about surfers, and the models even had to ape surfing on boards (but on their crate pedestals).

Max Toon

Sometimes when I'm familiar enough with people, I can turn them into caricatures. Or one will pop into my head spontaneously. Max has in quite a few forms, but I'm not always talented enough to put what I see in my head on paper (or pixel, such as a the case may be). I had a few takes that I wasn't fully happy with, but this one worked out.

Bad Hare Day

I finally decided to publish her and her head full of rowdy rodents. She's gotten a lot of Likes on Facebook, so I'm hoping if I start selling posters of my drawings she could sell.

Alicia At Acne 4

I almost sure this is done.

So this is Alicia, who helped me try on some pants at the Acne Studios store, and I loved how she had outfitted herself. She's the first in a series of sketches of real people working real fashion everyday.
