Pocket Brush Bold

...almost sounds like the name of a font. But it was a new brush (to me) that totally made this really cute sketch come to life. I dunno what made it happen, if it was the brush handling or just the happenstance of lines hat made this girl so appealing in her stylized manner. but I'm digging this sketch.

I went to see Angels In America—the two part Broadway play—on Thursday and Friday. So these are makeup drawings because I didn't get home in time to draw. Ponytail gal over here was a quick study in the Old Brush Ink.

Hairblog Revamp 3

I had actually completely transformed the original face and thought I improved on it, but as I worked, I decided to revert to a previous stage, and that's what I published for the entry the day before. However, I did have the more realized version saved too, so I tinkered with it a bit and decided that what I published first was better. Still, this was a god exercise.

I found an old drawing I had named hairblob (the hair was indeed one big, round mass) and I kept on "improving" it until it no longer looked anything like the original.

I grabbed a random Kyle brush—this once called the Big Bad Wolf—and sketched a face as is my wont. He looked as hipster as the technique, so I styled him as some sort of nautical Brooklynite.

Someone posted a stunning image of a very high contrast photo of an African woman with a very graphic afro. I wasn't so successful in reinterpreting it. So I just started playing around with the theme.

I had been chatting with Gabriel via Instagram DM for months, trying to set up a time when I would draw him. I finally got to this Saturday and while I wasn't having a great drawing day, he was wonderful and full of vibrant energy. And a seriously impressive appendage! Images to come.

Those hands weren't doing it for me so I succumbed and went to look at photo references to just get an idea how people would open their shirts. The thought of the thumbs peaking out didn't ever occur to me, but there you go.

I thought about drawing Storm from the X-men with this brush and in this style, but then I reverted to male nudity. Still, I out to see what I'd do with it in that subject matter, because I'm so rigidly tied to old school comic book storytelling it might open things up for me.

Those hands were bugging me, but I do like his thirsty vibe. Felt I should take the highlights out and just emphasize the denim, which is coming off in my mind anyhow. ;)

I tried doing a buzz cut on him with more textured brush but I feel like I'd prefer to keep the brush quality more consistent. Still, a fun experiment.

So naturally, I had to do a natural man. This contour tracing thing I'm doing is fun. But it's always okay since I know I can edit it digitally, I'd love to do it in natural media and just see if I can live with what I put down.

I tried this at half the resolution and it seems a bit heavier to me. I liked the open strokes when the resolution was higher. A;so, it moved from Fred Greenhill to David Downtown-ish. Maybe I'll try drawing from a photo reference and see if that yields different results.

I've been experimenting with newly discovered brushes that were always there, I just never used them. Feh!  These are the Natural Feel brushes, and because of my obsession with a more inky line, I suppose I never wanted to go this route before. But I see so many possibilities!  And initially for fashion illustration, because it reminds me of the kinds of ink strokes that Fred Greenhill might use in a Lord & Taylor ad (well, more skillfully than I am). This is at my usual poster resolution of 4000x6000 canvas.

Heavy Workload

I've been working on a rush design job these past few days so I've been concentrating my creative energy there. It's a lot to deal with so I haven't ben drawing on time—thank goodness I discovered back-scheduling here on Blogspot.

Minimal 3

I tried to make my last face look symmetrical, but Lord knows, when I'd flip it, it was woefully asymmetrical. I don't know why it looks that way to me, but every time I correct it, it looks weird and I have to lopside it again, so I just drew some random profile for tonight's post.

Classic Versus Contemporary

I drew the guy on the right first a few days ago, and without consciously styling him, and he totally ended up with some kind of mature, Upper East Side vibe, so I decided he should be talking with some Rick aficionado as they compare outfits...

Minimal, Too

I was inspired to draw a model's haircut from a photo, and I thought I'd try and extrapolate the model's features and recreate him from a different view. I ended up making it an exercise in proportion, as I have extremely lopsided drawings that I apparently don't know are lopsided. It's got something to do with our natural eye and how we see proportions, I suppose. Anyhow, after I flipped this guy to see him mirror image, I flipped out at how lopsided he was. I've corrected it, but at the same time, my corrections will always be born out of my natural lopsided view. Granted, human faces aren't always symmetrical, but I hardly want them looking like Shannon Doherty either.
