Philip

My friend Philip's birthday was the other week, but corona virus has put our celebration drinks on indefinite hold. I was also planning on drawing him a portrait by that time so many weeks ago now (or maybe it just seems longer when you're home quarantined) because I knew it would be fairly easy to do quickly since I'm so familiar with his face, but since things got delayed, so did this portrait. Well it starts now.

Fresco Coat 4

Trying out Fresco's watercolor brushes hat bleed when you use them. They bleed a bit too much for my liking, but I'm going to assume I just don't know how to control them yet.

Leather Mask 4

Not that you would see much progress from the previous days, but when I refine part of a whole, they're fairly obvi to me and definitely what I deem as work for that day. This was about adjusting the forearms and legs

Leather Mask 4

I decided to delete the outer lines and do my color silhouetting style that I did for my Hair series way back when, and I think it works well enough to post. Might let it sit a bit to see if I need to refine it further.

Leather Mask 3

So I gave him my fave Race Bannon hairdo and I think it works better. Plus I took a pic of me with a piece of leather on my face to use as draping studies for the face mask, and methinks that works better too. Still not sold on the style (it harks back to an older version of my inks, albeit with the newer rough brush, which I'm not sure works) but I'm happy with the detail.

Arms Crossed

I spent a lot of time watching reality tv shows as well as news programs. It seems to be the only things I really want to do while self quarantining. So drawing, despie having all the time in eh world to do it, seems to be taking second fiddle. I sketched this on my iPad while watching Top Chef.

Fresco Face

In this time of Corona Crisis and self-quarantine, I've had less energy for my artwork even if I've had all the time in the world to devote to it. So I decided to experiment more in Adob Fresco, specifically with their pencil brush, which I do rather like. This is a doodle I did while watching Rachel Maddow and listening to teh mess our political system has made in the face of this pandemic.

Lady Mask 4

Should she be naked? I want her body to look really soft and vulnerable, contrasting the mask's tech look.

Navigation Mask

I drew this guy while watching tv again, and he was looking more like a 3rd Stage Navigator from Dune! Now if only we could fold space to get to the grocery store...!

Lady Mask 3

I like this direction. It's almost like the Facehugger from Alien.

Aquamane 2

I'm not loving his features yet so I'm need to suss those out before I start doing the shading like in Grell's.

Lady Mask 2

I'm trying to make the most complex, Giger-y mask to contrast her sylph-like naked body. But I'm trying NOT to make it look like some sort of overly complex Storm Trouper.

Aquamane

I wrote about this before and I will always remember it. As a young artist and comic book aficionado, I was obsessed with the art of Mike Grell, aspiring to draw like him back when I was around 7 years old or so. I recall one panel in an Adventure comics back story featuring Aquaman, and I loved how he drew his face and how his hair looked like it was flowing in the seawater. So imagine my surprise when I found the panel decades later, and it was... kinda meh.

But I thought I'd try and redraw it more to my liking, and this is the initial draft. Which is also kinda meh right now.

Lady Mask

Masks everywhere. I mean, I don't have any so I suppose that which I do not have, I will instead draw. Kind of like a creative wishlist. And I want the most badass mask that will save me even if I'm nekkid in the street, like her!

Leather Mask 2

I decided the guy needed to look more butch bu I'm not loving his face. And I'll need to get references for the mask.

Leather Mask

I don't own a mask. I hear you shouldn't buy them anyhow as we take away from the masks that the care workers like nurses and doctors so desperately need at the front lines of the coronavirus battle. So I'm imagining fashion-y leather bandannas and I know they won't do anything to keep you safe from Covid 19, but that's why the guy is naked: it might as well not be there. It's so hard to feel safe in this age of social distancing and self quarantining.

Freco Coat 3

I wanted to experiment more with the watercolors, and I twisted the body angle a bit from yesterday and just used that as a basis. It's muddy but I'll have to learn how to manipulate the colors.

Tiis is a bit of a makeup sketch because these past few days of self quarantine and semi panic shopping have gotten to me. All I want to do is NOT go outside, but staying in is hard too, and I don't have eh wherewithal to be creative yet. I'm barely sketching enough as is.

Fresco Coat 2

It would be too easy to just make the coat wtihout fleshing out the anatomy underneath, but I wanted to get a better figure as a framework, so I developed the body layer in Fresco. I have to say, I like their pencil tool!

Fresco Coat

I took part in an online demo for Adobe Fresco this weekend and it inspired me to download it again and try it out once more, after an initial download that messed with my iPad. It draws well, but I have yet to get used to it. Then again, I have yet to get used to procreate after all this time!

After David 2

Those legs didn't quite work on teh previous version, especially after I adjusted the chest and most of the torso. But I'm not sure either if I want this pose...

Again, this is posted later but done earlier in the week, as a sort of makeup (fast forward?) since I've not been posting or drawing regularly because, who can? Covid 19 is taking all the desiyre for creativity out of the air.

After David

I wanted to try and experiment with a pen technique, and I had an image in mind of a pose i drew live when model David posed for us at a Meetup. But I did this without reference and I think the body needs work. It's the sketch I worked on before doing the Scott series of these days, but while I did this earlier, I'm posting it for later since these weeks have been messed up with corona virus panic and shit. Ugh, crazy times.

S. Redux 3

Final edits before I post on Instagram. I rather like the exercise, it was fun to draw in a messier new ink style I've not really done much of.

S. Redux 2

And here the rest of the body from yesterday's sketch. I feel like even his body style is a bit dated, as its bigger than I draw now. Considering he was a bodybuilder in the aughts, I suppose that's apt.

S. Redux

I have quite a few reference photographs that I've taken through the years, and I thought to myself, I hardly ever use them for work. So I pulled one out from over 10 years ago and decided to do a quick sketch. It's a style I'm not necessarily thinking as forward and more backward, but it's a fun exercise to do.

Boots with Skinny Crops

I dunno why but I'm suddenly feeling a fitted polo neck shirt like a Lacoste, preferably with a long pullover placket style, over fitted trousers and tall slim boots.

Matt In Big Pants 4

The flow was fine but the walk didn't feel right—I did a look like that before with big pants and a shirtless guy too, so the least I can do is change the pose up. But I'm STILL not happy with it. Aaaargh. If only I was just copying a photo verbatim, but noooo, it has to be a vision... lol

Head On 5

I'm losing steam on this sketch, but I decided to try and add some texture to the background since I didn't know what I was doing for the model's clothing—her face isn't very Fashion, so I wasn't going to throw any of the looks I liked from the Paris shows which I've been following quite closely. The building in the background is actually my memory of my home that I grew up in in The Philippines, which is no longer there (even teh street is no longer there!)

Old School Inkline 2

I pulled this old drawing from April 2018 because I wanted to retool it a bit before posting on the Fashion Illustration board on Facebook, for our First Friday event where you get to post your own drawings on every first Friday of the month. I chose to do a female sketch since it's International Women's Day thiscoming Sunday.

Matt In Big Pants 3

Take 3! This is a more fluid approach, which I kinda like, but I think it's not really the garment. The fabric doesn't really flow like that... uuuugh.

Matt In Big Pants 2

I'm not feeling how I'm rendering these pants. I can't decide if I want them to feel more fluid, even if the fabric of the actual onesie is kinda crunchy.

Tuesday, March 3, 2020

Matt In Big Pants

I've tried to go back and draw more of my friend Matt from the Rick Owens modelling shoot we did with his wardrobe. This is a shot of him wearing a onesie that he's worn as pants. I think what I needed was some nudity.

Treasure Trail

I looked at myself in the mirror with my sweatpants falling off and imagined a hotter guy than me in that get up. And here's the sketch.

Aaron at Kung's

I got pretty inspired with the model today at Kung's salon. I'm not sure why—maybe it's the combination of being attractive in an idealized way, yet not completely my type that I'd be besotted with the idea of perfecting his drawings. So in the end I got to experiment quite a bit, especially with sharpening my pencils a lot more and going for a more delicate, fine line drawing.
