I was advising my friend to try and draw regardless of whether or not she wants to, which is what I do even if I don't want to make anything for this blog. So often I'll give myself a short goal, like draw a duck in 2 minutes. I didn't time this one, but it's obvi a duck... colored like a Mexican mango.

I did a lot of retooling of the body, as well as adding more details to the face and hands. It hink the hands have come a long way since last iteration so that's the focus of this post. Although some might focus on that light globular thing on the side, hehe

My friend Meeling gave me a tee shirt with the toon I made of her as a print, which made me think Ernesto might need a print of himself on a tee. So I did an update to his paper doll for 2021! With and without mask, because lord knows what we need to do right now with the pandemic, just keeps on changing.

Hoodie Doodle

I think I was waiting for something to resolve on my computer so I grabbed the sheet next to me on my desk (some documents from a delivery) and just doodled on it.

Lift and Separate

I was walking to physical therapy the other day and saw a guy in front of me lift his arms, I think while chatting on the phone, and I observed how the fabric of his shirt draped around his frame. It inspired me to do a pose based on how a shirt would have off the body, seen from behind...while we can see his behind. The buttocks are the 'separate' part of the title. ;)

I wanted to share my progress with the model and thankfully he thought I got his likeness spot on. I usually don't like doing highlighting but it was done in some previous work that this is now part of a series in this stye.

Poet-ic, Done (I think?)

I wanted something to publish on Instagram, but I didn't really have anything I thought was good enough. I decided that I'd do a throwaway and post this proifle sketch from a month back, albeit with some improvements to the beige shadows and some touch ups to the hair. To me, the minor changes did a lot to make the drawing acceptable, but I wasn't really thinking people would respond to it. But you never know with people's tastes, and I got so many comments on it, I'm still skeptical! I even made a few new acquaintances via Instagram as a result.

Draw Anytime

 A friend from back in my college of Fine Arts days was being woeful about the fact that she doesn't draw as much nor as freely as we did when we were back in college. I told her the best way to start is to just draw with no expectations, anytime, anywhere on anything. To illustrate that point—literally!—I picked up a sheet lying next to me while I typed with her on Facebook, then drew something between messages. It was that easy, and could be that quick, o get started. And it doesn't matter if it's good or bad, just that you begin.

Woosang-esque 2

I realized my position was off on this drawing, after I overlaid it with the source image I was working from. I didn't trace after doing that, merely remembered where everything was with the  overlay. I think the proportions should work better now.

Big Eyes

I was looking at a magazine while watching tv, and one model I saw had great features that I wanted to channel, except I wanted to draw him with bigger eyes. Well, it got a slight bit comical...

Woosang-esque

I think Woosang Kim is my favorite new Asian model, and I've been trying to draw more Asians in my repertoire. Now that I think there are some directional male models who are Asian, I have a type to draw on...and literally draw. This is not meant to look like Woosang, but he's inspired me to draw a face like this.

Trapo

I FINALLY took out my fabric marker and did a test illustration on a torn piece of tee shirt fabric that I was saving as a dust cloth, or in Filipino parlance, a trapo. I think it handled nicely now all I need to do is take out my shirts and sketch on the tees I bought over two years ago specifically to draw on!

Or, in my mind, "shooting from below and looking up." Not sure why I always liked this angle, but there's something heroic about it I think.

Puffer

 YAAAAY, commission is done! And I both wanted to apply some of the skillset in doing it to my own work, but I also wanted to NOT draw for a bit. So I doddled a face, which was originally going to wear a puffer coat hence the title, but maybe that happens later.

 The 22 outfits got done! And some of them I even got some time to redo and improve!  But damn, this commissions was a large one for the amount of time: 22 fully painted images from scratch is no easy task in 14 days. Or maybe I'm just in need of more practice and skill. Although with these trousers, I think I managed to do the look alright.

This was an outfit where I thought, this is a good direction, but it's not quite there yet. I decided my sanity was worth more than redoing the whole sketch at the 11th hour, but I plan on doing more practice with these kinds of garments and proportions.

My biggest weaknesses is painting full draping and making it look fashion-y, esp if I don't have a references. Well, I'd gathered enough references that I decided, I will use them instead of just studying them and putting them away. I rather like how these wide leg trousers turtned out, even if I think I still need to make them less wide at the thighs—more fashion illustration!

Ugh, I've been going at it day and night, but I'm trying to make the client happy while getting satisfaction myself. Always a juggle! Anyhow, thank goodness some of the looks are fairly simple, and it's more about the draping (which I'm still trying to perfect painting).

 I think I've gotten a groove with painting my figures so long as the pencils are all set and acceptable (both to me and the client) that I can almost paint formulaically. However, I'll do that in a pinch, and I was definitely in a pinch to get the first set of painted figures approved.

I always try to include a mix of races, and I've recently strayed form the very dark African black models I've been doing to go to more African American skintones.

I have 22 outfits to do, and 22 male models to create. Here's another one, one of my more generic Asian faces but I'll change him up when I paint him, I just need to sketch out the figure for client to review all the clothes are properly rendered in pencil first.

 I tweaked this sketch from 2019 that I had such high hopes for, but never bothered to finalize! I'm hoping this can be completed soon.
