I had the idea of trying to redesign Dazzler's original silver jumpsuit and perhaps making it into a high-waisted flare leg jean ensemble in current fashion. But as I sketched out the look I suddenly wondered if it was worth pursuing.So I left it at a sketch,

Well, I found myself wandering on Instagram, and ended up in Kenshin Asano's page where so many of his wonderful hair stories inspired all sorts of high fashion images in my head. So suddenly the typical curls I do gave way to an editorially beat up face with just one single slice on his bangs. Ah, inspiration, how it changes things instantly.

I thought about adding more closeups to the layout, and I saw a face of a guy in an editorial on Fucking Young's site, where the shelf of his forehead made such a dark shadow in the inner corner of his eye, I thought I'd do something similar. I looked at the reference, put it away and began to draw my own version of it.

Christmas Magik, Re-Done

I couldn't help but tinker. I decided her hips were a bit wide and gave her Naomi Campbell hips to go with her thigh gap. Plus I adjusted her eyes a bit, although I'm not sure they're an improvement, minor as they are. Although I kept the 12.27 date on teh graphic since that was when I originally 'finished' her.

That proceeded quickly! I like her doll-like face and runway saunter.

I've been hemming and hawing on finishing up my friend Justin's Christmas gift from LAST year, a requested drawing of X-character, Magik. I finally decided that the elaborate new costume sequence I had planned feels all previous now, and so I thought I'd go back to her classic New Mutant's look, because the latest costume is too horrible to reproduce. This is the initial sketch.

Was trying to get this guy ready for a Christmas post, but Christmas wrapping and prep got in the way. Plus I barely touched it, just a few new attempts at painting the fabric on the bow...

Train-ing

I tried to do a sketch on the train on my way up to Hudson, but frankly I wasn't too enthused. All I wanted to do was rest and get out of that train already! So this guy is an effort, just not a very good one. Made on Procreate Pocket.

Wall Leaner

Saw a clothed model posed leaning against a wall, and tried to figure out how to render that as a nude. Of course, using a watercolor isn't helping things as I'm going somewhat minimal...

Shadowmapping

This was an exercise in blocking out shadows and highlights. I was interested in this walk pose because it differs from my usual in that the bent knee is about to step forward, so the leg is actually raising. Normally I have the bent knee trailing behind, so this presented different shadows and highlights

I tried a different approach to painting this face. I kinda like it, but not sure how to adapt it in terms of the rest of the editorial!

Yesterday's side view became a "looking over my back" view when I saw an image in my head of how the pose could play out in my layouts. I like this pose, but will have to see what clothing I feature. I'm thinking of some back-pleated pants from Hed Mayner, or possibly another view of the device coat from CHCM.

I had drawn a side view of a man looking away from the view, and then I saw a pic on Zara with teh same pose, so I thought I'd see how different the bone structure was to compare with my memory. There were certainly more variations with the way the teeth and forehead protruded. Always a good way to practice.

Okay, I kinda love how this Junya outfit turned out, but I intentionally chose it for the color. Now I just need to make sure the whole article looks good, both illustration-wise as well as editorially.

Playback, Greek

I was trying to do another Playback video, this time inspired by some of Dimitris P.'s Greek gods/performers, but it got a bit comical so I dunno if this is going anywhere, haha

I was testing out the playback Action in Photoshop as a means to record my drawing process in Photoshop. It didn't quite work out but I did get a good drawing in the process. I was trying to sketch out an idea for an online model based in England, based off of my fave flasher theme, but the sketch turned out good on its own. I love it when things work out.

I passed by a frame store on the way to,lunch the other day, and I saw a framed artwork with two faces posed this way. I liked the composition, and later realized I had done the same composition in an older sketch just with a woman and a man. So this time I thought I'd just try with two men. This is hte initial rough.

Pink & Red Also

I though that if it were an editorial, there should be a full-sized sketch of the outfit too. Although I also thought, AM I doing an editorial? I didn't actually have a plan for the previous sketch. But anyhow, here's the quick croquis.

Pink & Red

Hot pink and red are my favorite combination right now, and I've been meaning to do a sketch that really focuses on that. This ons is looking a bit Alex katz, but also 80s fashion illos. It feels too easy, like I need to do more to it, but I should really be leaving it as simple as is. Also trying to remember which brushes I used for a recent nude sketch I rediscovered, so exploring the Wet Charcoal brush here was an effort to remind myself.

Bazaar-ed 2

Gotta figure out if I need a model for this. Too many elements here whose forms I'm only guessing at, from the shoulders to the chin on his forearm, to the foreshortening of that forearm, etc etc.

There was a Bazaar Thailand cover I saw on an IG follower's feed, and it inspired me to do a similar pose on a tabletop angle, but in my own way. This is an initial layout of the pose.

Escalera-esque

There's an artist by the name of Roberto Excalera whose work evokesd the fashion illustration styles and techniques of the 70s through 80s, and when someone posted a piece by him, I noticed similarities in our own approaches. It's not surprising since I learned much of my craft by studing fashion illustrators [ast and adopting technqies I find attractive. This is a very quick, rough sketch inspired by looking at Escalera's IG page, althiugh it's also very much in my wheelhouse and similar to sketches I've done before.

I fleshed out the EGONlab outfit on him and added some more color. Although tbh, not sure I like this style.

Workoutfit Doodle

Well, it's really a Super Heroine costume I'm trying to work out. I had a sheet full of Princess Projectra costume ideas, and this is a variation I thought of for one approach, but I didn't have any space on the sheet so I pulled the closest thing: the packaging of my new Tramontina non-stick skillet.Random!

Wednesday & other doodles

I'm not sure what made me pick up a sheet of paper and just draw on the empty spaces (as I used to do with everything ebfore the advent of digital drawing), but I started out with a Wednesday Addams profile and then some weird dress.

Rando

I was just doodling, and I did this guy's profile, but he wasn't handsome, so I decided to make him amiable without being model good looking. And then I drew him clutching a pillow while wearing sweats. is he at some therapy session? I dunno. Not sure I care either.

Mr.McLean, Done

Or at least, I hope it's done. Because every time I look at the sketch and compare it to the pic I took of John, I am tempted to tweak it again further. But John himself thinks it looks like him, so I'm gonna go with that. Plus the motto I should follow, "Done is better than perfect," applies.

White Shirt 2

This is a sketch from months back, when I was hoping to do a triptych of men's fashion poses and this was the lead one. I tweaked his eyebrows and some of the shading, as well as the background color, I am often wont to do. Always the perfectionist.

Neck Position

I'm a fan of the poses where people are sitting somewhat slumped on a chair or bench, and while their backs slope into a hunch, their chins are lifted up while their gaze looks down (at the camera). I draw this a lot already from my head, but I thought it would be nice to sketch from a photo, so that I can hopefully create the muscle memory.

Happy Thanksgiving! I was out all evening at my friend Erwin's house, so I didn't get to sketch much new today, so this retooled oldie will be today's entry. I adjusted the outfit because I realize the proportions are wrong, then I added a mid tone in purple even if it's a black suit—a highlight sheen, if you will.

I decided to post these old fashion sketches so I tweaked and colored them a bit more to make them more presentable. Then I added the parcels sketch to it to make a better composition for IG.

Gym Guy Back Profile

The good thing about the gym is I get to see a lot of men and study their anatomy again. It's part being creepy, part artistic, although I AM really studying how their muscles move (I doubt they'd see it that way if they caught me looking). This one was a guy whose chin seemed to jut out as far as his forehead did from the back profile, something I assumed wasn't the case. So I tried drawing it. (see the pink linework). But then after Raf Simons announced his retirement of his eponymous line, Vogue posted an image with a similar view, so I decided to draw that both from memory and then from the pic, to solidify my understanding of it. Hopefully having practiced it will make it more fluid the next time I draw it, since it's such a good view.

Gym Guy On His Phone

There's a hot guy at my gym who was standing with his knee up on a bench between sets, looking at his phone, and I liked the pose a lot. I also imagined if his dick might peek oout of his shorts, although that didn't really happen in reality. But I wish it did!

Projecting Projectra

My sheet of hand-drawn Princess Projectra costume redesign ideas has been on my desk, staring me in the face over the past few days, and I was delighted to see Haider Ackerman's new Fila collab featured hooded looks similar to the ones I had designed for Jeckie. Always fun to be tapping into the same ether as designers I admire. These are some new sketches working out some of those ideas.

Linda Simpson is an East Village drag queen who is a cohort from back in the 90s when I was an EV habitue. She asked me to do her birthday invitation in 1996, and since it was her birthday again, I posted it on her Facebook wall, but newly colored.

Naked Anime Man

 I'm currently loving the new season of anime after a couple of seasons not really watching anything, and Chainsaw Man is absolutely beautifully done, from the body language to the cinematography to the writing. So I got an image of a guy standing in an open space, and I thought to emulate the animation style, but then me being me, I got caught up in making the pose right. So, still working on variations of it, as you can see.

I discovered a new Instagram account where the owner takes lots of artful nudes of himself, and his poses are incredibly Egon Schiele-like, so I did a quick sketch trying to emulate his forms.

Men's Tableau

The Gym Hoodie guy from yesterday had such a nice feel, I wondered if I should do more in that style, so I decided to do a daddy-like guy with a mustache and pleated high rise trousers. I kinda like him—he reminds me of Mr.McLean.

There was a guy at my gym wearing his hood on his hoodie up while he did his stretches, and I was intrigued by how the fabric draped on his head—it was such a simple drape that I wouldn't ever have thought would form that way. So I wanted to do a quick sketch of it, but of course I made him pantless (of course he wasn't that way at the gym—although THAT would be a fun gym).
