Homework Sample Gal

I was handing out a Photoshop assignment and I wondered what kind of image I should give them to play with, and in the end I just decided instead of looking for a new royalty free image, I'll just draw something. I'm happy my proportions just came together really spontaneously! I've recently been worried I don't have the proportions anymore.

Textural

While prepping for my new role as an instructor, I've been doing practice sketches just as a lark. This one is when I was thinking about how to show patterns and textures.

I discovered an image of the model Malgosia was in a pose like this, and I thought it might be fun to do a nude man in the same pose.

Matrixie

"Matrix" is slang for my Filipino friends when we refer to older, matron clothing or behaviour. And I feel like, with my mom's training, I always drew and designed for an older woman. This was a test demo I did for myself, and I'm reconsidering the outfit and look.

Lean & Sketchy 3

I decided to prep this guy for IG posting. I had all these ideas that I would turn him into a multi-outfitted paper doll, but typically me, I ended up scrutinizing all the tiny details like the line widths in his ankles and the appropriate l=placement of his penis, lol.

Selfie Reflection

I drew a quick sketch based on an online follower's super hot mirror selfie that he posted. Ugh, he's SO my type physically. Although since it was IG it was cropped off at the part we want to se most. Dang!  I seldom ever draw people from their own pictures, but this was just a fun exercise.

Fatto Hatto

I did a fat pigeon sumo and named it Fatto Hatto, or a kind of Japanese English name that basically translates to Fat Dove.

Look Up Below

I've been chatting with a potential model and he's been asking me if I did Japanese hentai, basically. It's an extreme kind of sexual illustration that I don't do much of, possibly only when I would draw it at the very overtly sexual drawing salons I used to attend, and those drawings are decades old by now. Still, I entertained the idea and did a quick sketch of what could be a potential drawing if he posed. I wonder if this is off brand for me.

IWNSTB Cover

I'm working on a new commission for an old (omg, it feels weird to call him that but it's been like 2 decades) friend and this was the initial sketch I put together for the layout. Not sure if I should post more and pre-empt the book, but I guess I'll ask my client to make sure. Looks to be a fun project!

I got inspired by a fashion layout to do someone with fashion model hair and physique with just a neck scarf. This isn't quite it but as I often do, I just sketch and refine later.

Inktober 25—Ariel Redux

Five years after the fact and I decided to recolor the body a bit since my friend Justin wanted a copy of it and I realize I just ran it off without really paying attention, just to send it to him. This is a bit more realized.

Towelling Off

I've been chatting with a lovely man on Instagram and plotting potential poses for him. He's a bit shy about being nude in drawings where I might capture his face to the point of recognition, so I was devising ways in which I could hide his head. This towel pose would be great if I covered his face more, but I also wanted to just draw the pose as I wanted, as a headless body is too easy for me.

Exactly what the title is, lol. Although I need to refine the body language more, this one is a bit stiff.

I wonder if in the future people will see my work at random on teh internet, and never see the progressions of pieces I posted and later improved? I might be recognized for the interim, imperfect pieces that I didn't like. PArt of the perils of posting your process, I suppose.

From Spain

I've been chatting with a potential new model from Spain, and as we discussed him posing for me, I did some quick sketches of a possible piece. This is one of them.

Summer Fit, Done

I finally figured it out and fixed it. Not only was the knee slightly low, but the pant leg was low as well, and the foot was turned to the viewer when it should have been a silhouette like the front shoe. All fixed now, and done, and published on Insta.

Summer Fit

Summer boots has turned into Summer fit, as in outfit, since I removed the boots. I thought I'd leverage teh white socks and loafers trend instead, which is very 2023.

I can't quite put my finger on it but there's something wrong with the back leg. Is the knee too long? Is the shoe too small? I can't quite figure it out but it looks wrong somehow.

AI Test

I don't really use Illustrator to draw, mostly to create logos from typography. But since I will be working on Illustrator this coming semester, I decided to explore some of the AI (That's Adobe Illustrator, not Artificial Intelligence) brushes that purportedly give you a looser hand. Enh, I can still see the math in these.

Another Demo Test

I was inspired a bit by the new Prouenza collection, and while I liked the outfit I had in mind, using this brush was a bad idea—it looks like old attempts at digital fashion illustration. Need to shift my approach for digital womenswear illlos.

I haven't done flats professionally, but I work with them all the time. So this was a quick attempt to dp=o a flat in Photoshop without any croqui. I think I'll draw a new croquis first.

I was reading online and studying some fave renderings of sequins. One YouTube instructor was showing their work, and I totally thought they did a mediocre job of it. So I took my cue from the great Jackie Doyle, and I think I improved the sequins rendering here, even if I wasn't copying anything but doing it all from imagination. Some more practice needed though.

I tweaked it a bit, refining the lines and adjusting the size of his head and his thighs, just to shift the proportions a bit, less elongated. And now I think it's ready to post on IG!

Inkiest

I had a vision in my head of a guy's hair and body, rendered in a super messy ink. Not sure this is it, but sometimes as you lay down marks, you just run with it and it becomes a new thing based on what you put down, versus what you originally imagined. But I still want to steer it towards what I imagined.

Also, it looked a lot like my friend/model Ernesto, who didn't post foor this, but it resembled him enough that I decided to gear the musculature to mimic his anatomy, plus I added his tattoos.

Okay, so I feel like I overworked the previous version...so I reverted to the original sketch and proceeding from that. That's the good thing about digital work—you can go back to an old version like you never left it.

Between the angle of the arm and hand being just so, and the face being...well, better, I'm still fiddling with this sketch. Gah, it shouldn't be this labored!

So I thought it should be a Summer uniform of the big printed shirt, combined with the boots over tight jeans that I saw in an old video of the band The 1975. But I'm struggling with my elongated fashion illo proportions here...although I do like the hand. Maybe the jeans need to be black...?

Summer Boots

It's First Friday on my Fashion Illustration group that I help moderate on Facebook, and we're supposed to be able to post one drawing each of our own work. I had another drawing I wanted to post that I had worked on in the past, but I didn't have the wherewithal to open it, much less finish it off as it dserved. But I thought of drawing a new, raw piece just in ink, inspired by the confident ink applications of Steven Stipleman. But not sure I want to post this one either. I like the immediacy but not that...hand.

Demo Test

So, on Monday I was told I will be starting at FIT, teaching a class on Photoshop and Illustrator with the intent of using them for fashion illustrations and presentation. Right up my alley! So I was reaing the syllabus from last year and saw some things I wasn't sure I ever drew, so I got into the mode of sketching away, and using yesterday's new Summer brushes too (this was the Felt Tip-y one). Not the best drawing and a terrible look, but not bad for a quick doodle.

Juani

I liked the preview image of the model for Drawing Men Online's session today, so I decided to give it another shot even if I was less than happy about the first one I did. This one was better resolution and connection, but not the greatest poses. But I still got one good drawing out of it, but because the rest of teh session felt like a wash for me, I feel like it wasn't a great session overall. Interestingly enough though, the reactions from my online artists friends were very positive, I suppose because they liked the immediacy of the one drawing I posted on Instagram of the model removing his shorts while reclining on the couch. I spared them this erection shot, which was too much for my Insta, methinks (or Insta in general anyhow).

Summer Brushes 2023 2

I tested some more brushes and this one was super smooth. It's not really my style but I can always make it my style if I use it enough.
