I decided to get rid of the onlooker and just concentrated on the seated guy that I've dubbed Mr.Pumpkin Spicy. I thought I might get away with drawing from memory but it looked like I really did need a reference, and thankfully Ernesto came through again for me. I would never have thought his knees would have done that!

New Gym Crush

I saw a new guy at my gym today and he had a moustache and big 70s glasses and the kind of lean physique I seem to be attracted to.  But what intrigued me the most was how his triceps and biceps looked from behind, when he was resting between sets.

Tee Shirt Flats

I made some sample flats in Illustrator to show my kids in class tomorrow how to do them. Flats are clothing that is exactly that—flat-looking, like you have them spread out—flat—on a surface.

4A's 40th tee

My high school class is celebrating its 40th anniversary since we graduated, and pics of my high school class in custom made polo shirts left much to be desired. The shirts looked like they were white polos that they then wore a blue bustier dress over. So I did a fashion sketch to that effect.

His face keeps evolviing, and I like how it feels more real to me as aI 'carve' him into being. It feels like carving, like those toys I saw in the Sears Christmas Wishbook 1965 edition, where statues embedded in soft plaster blocks would reveal themselves as you chipped away at the blocks to revel "your" sculpture underneath!

An online retailer was pushing a gigantic fleece as some sort of street fur puffy and I thought it made a nice enough portrait collar for a menswear sketch.

Working on this cover and realizing I need to edit it from the views it will be seen, most notably as a cover on a shel without teh entire spread shown. So a little cleaning up, enlarging the hidden husband's hand since it was so tiny (and probably need to upo it a tad more) and starting to clean up the line work...

I liked the face I did yesterday but part of my process its to redraw it over and over, just noodling with the features until I get a guy I like. It's not that any of them are bad, but eventually one comes up that feels right. Although this one's head might be too small now...

Just playing with it some more while I grade class work...he's VERY 80s but also me in the aughts with that upswept hair. I always liked those waves. I used to call it my Tsunami do.

I was thinking of how after years of 70s Peter Weller bangs, men's hairstyles are going back to a brushed and cleaned up look. I've seen rumblings of it in the men's and women's shows, and my instincts are usually good so I've started to draw men's hairstyles in this way. Also inspired by the collars of next Spring's Margiela and this Spring's Peter Do x BR collab, which I tried on but ultimately didn't buy. The collar was too huge and on a super complicated shirt dress that I ultimately felt like I would not want to have it wear me (it was too much look),

Ernie Cake

My friend and erstwhile model Ernie is having a birthday next week, so I thought I'd commission a birthday cake again for him since he's visiting NY from LA, his home of the last 4 years, where he opened up a personal training gym. Was thinking of designs at the gym and came up with this one to suggest to the cake baker.

I think this idea speaks for itself. Now I just need to fix the anatomy of that sitter—two sets of perspective foreshortening to deal with? Oh fun.

Roped, 2

I posted this on Instagram but I'm not sure if it's actually done, since otherwise I would have written "Done" in the title. But I am not 100% happy with the face I created—I was going for cupid's bow lips and Hugh Grant hair, but not sure I tlike either his looks or his expression enough. But still, it's a good bit of drawing and it's fairly popular now on IG so good for now. But might give him a background later...

Leap of Fashion, Done

I did this sketch almost fully-finished back in June, and I knew that I just needed to go into it and fix little detail-y things like the line quality and extraneous marks and blots. So I finally did it today. Plus I was inspired to because my client whose work I've been posting over the past couple of days, wanted this look and feel for their project, so it felt right to work on right now!

Wondering if this is a better position? It feels sweet and counteracts the relatively extreme outfits for the grooms. But is it too sweet?

Those hands will be the death of me. I know I've had to think long and hard about how to do them, and this initial decision isn't working out. I need something to convey a strength in the grasp, but also tenderness. And after many moments grasping my own hands and analyzing the right tension in the arms and tightness of the fingers, this emerged. Although I'm not sure if the angle is there yet.

I have a process where I let things stew a bit while I think about it, and I often work illustrations that way by leaving them open on my desktop so I see it, and I have to think about how I'm going to complete it. This book cover project has gotten clearer and clearer, to the point that I just needed to put the marks down. I've actually had it open on my dektop for weeks, drawing a bit here and there but mostly ruminating. I finally I decided to use a classic Dior gown for the man on the right. 

Pants Croquis

I wanted a figure with which to demo placing prints on a pair of pants, but I kinda got waylaid with just sketching and no prints emerged to take over.

Dirty Work

 

So I had to draw a figure on paper and take a pic of it with my iPhone so that I had a bad pic I could work with to show my students how to isolate the figure and clean it up in Photoshop. Ugh, this blog needs more penis.
