I continued my naive hand-drawn animation for my friend Ernesto's Xrcyze personal training gym, and this makes the holiday series complete, from Hannukah to NYE. Got it in time to text it to him for NYE tomorrow, when i have to entertain my friends from out of town...

Just doodling and ended up with this guy posing in a sweater. Still out of it because holidays, but will get drawing in earnest again soon.

Rough Walk

This drawing is kind of emblematic of my state of mind: between the holidays and entertaining friends who are here and coming to town, I'm a bit all over the place and on the run...not unlike this sketch!

This one is for the trio of pups I painted for Ernesto. I still don't like this gift wrap scheme but this is it for the year. Ugh, I was so on my game last year but this year, even with more time, I still slacked off. Ah well, ya win some you lose some.

Not my best gift wrap idea but I only have two or three gifts to give this year and I'm doing them all as watercolor portraits, so I suppose it's apropos. Funnily enough, I didn't even plan how to do these, I just painted and left it at that.

I'm painting my friend Erwin's dog, April, for Erwin's Christmas present. I've never painted a dog before (save for that terrible one I did back in Manilla when I was like 8), much less in watercolor, and I'm surprised how well this turned out. Yay me!

Anyhow, started this on teh 23trd but finished it by the 24th, early morning. Just didn't take a pic of the original process sketch.

Pink Turtleneck

I'm digging the 70s/early 80s vibe of this guy, with the fluffed up coif to his Tom Cruise-esque features.

Shower Pose 4

I saw an Instagram post where a man's bikini brief-clad butt showed the shadowy demarcations of his muscles, and I tried to repro that from memory, although not sure I did it well at all. Gonna have to go back to that file and study it before trying it on my own...

Merry Christmas 2023

I always liked this animation style where your obvious inability to keep the exact same lines is a plus more than a minus. It's kind of a Charlie Brown Christmas in a way.x

I decided to give him some major hair, this shower pose guy, and suddenly he's part indie hottie, part Olimpio Fusco. I also so a yatzer feature on a fantastic apartment in Spain with a painting where they brushed off the model's face, but I like his face too much to do that so I'm doing it behind his linework.

I was standing in the shower just like the drawing on the left, and I thought to myself, it feels like a nice pose, let me draw it and see. This is the initial gesture. Wanted to make sure I got that S curve properly.

Glute Beaut

I saw a pic of a guy sitting on a ledge, from behind, and I loved how his gluteal muscles formed, so I made a mental note to try and draw the same thing from memory.

Winter 23 Brushes

Every time Kyle Webster releases a new set of seasonal Photoshop brushes, I download them and try them out, in case I might find a new fave brush. So far only a few of interest to me here, but you never know how I might react to one in teh future if i randomly start sketching with one...

Mutant Face

I was just reading an online comic featuring Madelyne Pryor, the once-and-again Goblin Queen, and I noted one panel where the drawing was great but overly done, and I thought to myself, do I like this? Which made me think, back when I was a kid, I wanted stylized work tht approached realism, but wasn't realistic. Which seems right because if i drew comics now, i think I'd have lost all the dynamism that drew me to comics art in teh first place, as I've traded it for more accurate renderings of things (well, mostly men in my case).

I saw a pic of a guy who was crouched on the floor and his abs sort of pivted at the hips, and I wanted to try and capture that sort of block-ish-ness. This is a rough start.

I had this open idea to add a sort of background filigree of a mix of traditional della robia style leaves and motifs and mix in some gay elements like studded leather and maybe phones with Grindr on it, and even disembodied erections, but now Im wondering if there's enough space to actually make that insertion significant, or if I should just retain one or two elements and just make it a pattern?

Class Sketches

I had a notebook hanging around in my apartment for years, waiting for me to use it for something. I always thought it would be a repository of important sketches I would invariably do...and yet, I never imagined it would be used for showing my students how to draw their different garment ideas, and how best to render them. It's always best to do it on a separate sheet so they see the idea but have to remember it to do it themselves.

I've had occasion where I showed a student on their file, and I wonder if they will just take my rendering and place it on their work, so this notebook is much more useful. But it has so many of their individual problems sketched out for them to see how thongs could be drawn. I take it for granted that I can just draw almost anything I imagine...

I gave the disembodied head a muscular nude bod...and what was a throwaway sketch is looking like I could finish him up and post him on Instgram, which kid of acts as my publication site.

I realized yesterday in a panic that I missed my November deadline on this drawing, and when teh hell did December happen? We all plead ignorance. Anyhow, I popped it back out again and continued inking, and really refining the look and feela bit more. The groom kind of got a Mike Allred kinda feel, and I'm thinking of how to spread that look on to the dress more... Or I might have to remove the white highlights as much as I love them.

Posey 2

Yesterday's gals were terrible not great, but I improved on them a bit finally. I refine this even further before except I left that file in school. This is an older one and I think that left arm needs to be longer, or maybe the legs just need slimming down (again!). I'm sure I have a different version from class yesterday but that will count for another post methinks. Assuming I bring it home to post here!

Posey

After my class on Tuesday, I realized that despite my suggestion that the kids make it easier on themselves and draw a croquis with less movement, they almost all wanted to draw someone more posed and with more attitude. I guess I shouldn't blame them—I would have done the same at that age. So I thought I'd develop a new croquisto match theirs, so I could demo how you should render clothing on an angle, how things fall, drape, etc. These are my initial gals. Terrible poses but I'll clean them up. That's what roughs are for...

Long Bangs

I saw a pic online of a guy with his curtain bangs falling over his eyes, and thought, I should draw that. Then halfway through, I thought, "I think I'll stop." I can lose interest real quickly with doodles.

Croqis Vectorized

This drawing doesn't look like 'me' but it's definitely MY version of a digital fashion croquis. I think maybe her legs are a little too thick, and need to be even more sylized. My problem (and perhaps my strength) is that I make my sketches lean a bit too much on the realistic drafting side...

I think he's ready for his Instagram closeup. I don't know if he's the best one to post, I've posted a very similar drawing (albeit with white briefs) just two posts ago, but at least he's different in that he's a redhead in black briefs! lol The minutiae.

I eschewed my usual white briefs because I do those all the time, so I thought I'd give him a Tony Manero moment (ugh, such an old reference) and give him black bikini underwear. But I also thought, maybe he's a redhead? I don't draw redheads that often, and he looks like he'd be a handsome one. So far he's barely strawberry blond.

Facebook (yeah, I'm old and still on Facebook, but that's where all of my other old friends are so sue me) has been showing me accounts of people/groups I haven't seen in a while, accounts I follow that I haven't been shown on my feed in recent years. Not sure what's up with the algorithm but a character design group I followed sent me sketches from the artist Gigi C (can't recall his last name) and his work on European strip Dylan Dog. He does the shadow under the lip thing in ways that I've observed in people but haven't gotten to master yet, so I thought I'd do a version and see what I was doing wrong versus what I thought Gigi was doing right.

I saw a reclining pose online and thought to replicate it without looking, so I went ahead and sketched this guy out, but halfway through I switched from back to white lines, and he started looking like a faun. And then I lost interest, lol

Ski Man 2

I really like how this sketch turned out, yet I still don't think it's a finished piece. It's a very successful practice piece, maybe? I really want to evolve this look into something I can own even more. I added some details to teh parka to make it look more real and improve the shape a bit...

Stiff Croquis

I have to teach my students how to scan and vectorize their croquis sketches, and I didn't have a sample 10 head croquis that I thought was apropos, so I drew one in Photoshop. She's so stiff, but I kinda want a plain stander, so they can just design their clothing off of her without having to deal with folds or high hips or whatnot. The results are quite clinical, she looks like an android lol

B-Side Nudes

I woke up early on Saturday and thought to myself, oh, I might be able to attend that drawing session with Mitch, a model I'd been chatting with on Instagram for the past year or so. But then I didn't really muster up the energy but clearly felt like I should draw from a model. So I thought I'd just open up some of the old files I had saved of various poses I never used (the B Sides, if you will), as well as draw from images I saw online, and just sketch. These are some of the results.

Grip

I had been watching porn (shocking, I know) where teh guy was being, uh, attended to by another guy, and I liked the idea of cutting out that action but hinting at it in how the main figure reacted, whether through his facial expression or the fact that his hand is gripping the ledge he's leaning on...

Ski Man

I looked outside my window this morning and saw a woman with a black vest over a red sweater, carrying a big blue tote. But at first glance I thought she was actually wearing a color blocked jacket and I liked the idea of that color combo, so I started creating a drawing with those colors. But I thought ski jacket so I got inspired by vintage ski fashion illustrations in 1960s era GQ, plus a bit of inspiration from another teacher's style from their demo yesterday (he was blocking colors on a garment). I rather like how this turned out—gonna see if I can leverage this style going forward.

Demo Not Demo

So I finally did the demo yesterday, and it went well enough during the performance to an audience that was basically 5 people, which I was glad for as there was less need to perform. But after the fact I looked at my drawing, which wasn't bad  but wasn't great, so I'm not posting it and instead posting this sketch I tried to do to psyche myself up for the event.

I have a demo performance planned for Friday with a bunch of other teachers but I'm not sure what I will be drawing. So testing out which styles I might use...depending on whether or not I actually have a computer to draw with!
