Flasher Fridays 3

Wellies? Or should he be wearing sneakers? Styling questions.

Flasher Fridays 2

Should that be Flasher Saturdays then? I've been wanting to do multi-figure sketches for a while, and I'm uncertain of the level of finish I should strive for. I'm inspired by Antonio's multi-person sketches, but also the feeling of Bill King's old dynamic group shots. I always love the energy of my quick roughs, but there's a part of me that doesn't think that's worth showing to the public at large, even if I do like it when I see it in other people's work.

Flasher Fridays

I'm thinking of working a new hashtag since I seem to be obsessed with men flashing peen while otherwise clothed. And I rather like the rawness of this drawing but do I dare post it on Instagram as is? Is it too raw?

Beach Boy 2

Was refining this drawing further from the initial rough, really trying to bring it down to an almost papercut collage level of flatness. I wonder if this is the Patrick Nagel ideal I've always held in high esteem, coming through, albeit filtered through a few other art references...?

Calamity Science

I've been following the lovely figure model David online for months, hoping to get to a session where I could draw him because he's modeled for some incredible artists. I finally got to on Wednesday night's long pose session at Drawing New York, although I wasn't necessarily on my A game since Id bee rushing a job all weekend through Wednesday, and my creative tank was empty. That said, I think it was still a good session.

Beach Boy

I was walking home from the West Chelsea area and as I got into the area near an old vintage poster chop, I started thinking of images based on the clean, colorful style of those old posters, and a very stark image came to mind. And for whatever reason, actor Noah Centineo kept on coming up as the inspiration for the feel of this guy, even if I wasn't really trying to make it look like him (and I certainly didn't even look at photos of him for this).

Gaze 2

I wasn't happy with the line quality nor some of the features on this drawing, and I tried to retool it but it's still not feeling right. He's a white blond here, with eyebrows to match.

Andrew?

For whatever reason, the side view of this drawing reminds me of model Andrew Levandowski, and he even has a very similar pose that I forgot I had seen (until just now, when I was writing out this blog post). Ohh, the subconscious is powerful indeed. And here I thought I was just drawing this on my own inspiration...

Savor It 2

I originally did this sketch on the fly and finished it in a night 4 and a half years ago. Tonight I resurrected it for a #FlashbackFriday post on Instagram but I tweaked it ever so slightly with an extension of his dick lol

Courtesy 2

It's actually courtesy, as in that little bow you do as a sign of respect. Although I'm not sure respect is in play with this one, lol.

Gaze

I did a few drawings on the same day but even if this one got developed further, I much prefer this very spare undone version. It reminds me of my model friend Laurie Harding, even if it doesn't actually resemble him...

Dan's Summer Look

My friend Dan texted me about what his Summer '19 steez should be, and I suggested layered button up collared short sleeved shirts. He seemed to like the idea. This was a 3 minute sketch I scratched off in my iPad to illustrate my idea to him.

Video Pants

I saw a music video playing on a monitor at the gym, and I rather liked the guy;s outfit, and his style. The pants themselves weren't that new, but it was the overall image I liked. Now, trying to recreate it but in a fashion pose, I'm not sure I'm capturing what I felt I saw, at least in this initial rough...

Seated, Also

I tried it without all the pre-drawing. The sketchiness was killing my ardor for the pose. But this isn't working either.

Seated

I had an idea of a drawing with an overhead view of a seated guy, so I tried it out in my iPad. It's not as easy as the idea—I didn't really get a good 'look' in my had about the shoulder and subsequent arm positions, so it's messing up the idea (which I only saw clearly in the head and crotch, lol!)

Oliveman

This guy was my first serious sketch in my iPad in a while, and probably the one that looks most like my current work, as opposed to me futzing around and trying to find something that works on he Procreate or Adobe Sketch apps. I did bring it into Photoshop and my trusty Wacom tablet to adjust details here an there afterward, but its still mostly iPad.

He's also my first process vid!

Backside

The whole point of this drawing for me was to show his balls. I wanted to draw the backside of a man whom you wanted to see more of, specifically his genitals, lol. It' still a rough sketch, mind you. I need to refine the lines and anatomy, if it gets developed further...

Jaime, Done

I got this pic from Jaime, an I have to say, I really don't see him in it. He says he does, but I really can't. No wonder I let him have it immediately.

The Harpo Marxist

Rich was the model for Wednesday night at Drawing New York, and I wasn't expecting his look. Kinda a better looking Rick Moranis with silver hair, he was actually fun to draw. These were two excerpts from his session. I'll have to get better shots of his sketches—these look distorted. Anyhow, the title of this post derives form his clever Instagram handle.

Color Study 5

I've been drawing a lot with natural media, and I was jonesing for something strong and rich instead of my usual light touch with color (when I do detail, that is. When I do contour, my fashion illustration instincts kick in, and my lines are strong and confident). So I opened up this digital gouache color study I had done in October, as I see the unfinished face a lot in my Instagram and I tell myself I should really get to it. I tooled around with painting a bit more in this style.

Blue Man

Well, he isn't actually blue, but the outline is. I think I had originally tried to do him as a line work peice, but I liked some of the experiments with color that I came up with. These thing line drawings always feel vintage to me, harking of Gruau and vintage poster ads.

Private Drawing Session: Ethan

I'd long spoken with artist Chuck N. about drawing with him when he schedules private sessions with a model, and I finally got to do so this Sunday evening at the Leslie Lohman Project Space. It was a great session with just 1 model, 4 artists (myself included) with a diverse range of styles and backgrounds—and a whole lot of space. I loved it, and I think it inspired me to draw better. I even got to go back to larger format drawings, like these first three, working in an 18 x 24 canvas which I admit I was a bit hesitant about but thankfully my proportions are still okay. More images to come when I can photograph them properly..

Tony, Tony, Tony!

I was chatting with a male model named Tony online via DM, and he asked me what kinds of poses I wanted him to shoot for me, for a collab. He was eager to suggest x-rated ones so I sent him x-rated pose possibilities (really rough quick sketches, mind).

View From The Sixth Floor 2

I wanted more visual variety and depth, so I thought a closeup of a dramatic puffer silhouette would help, but I'm not sure it's a good addition on its own. I think this will need to be ruminated on.

View From The Sixth Floor

I was looking down on the avenue watching people walk by, huddled in their parkas and coats to stave off the freezing cold we had today and for the past several. And one man's graphic parka in particular made me want to document all the different coats that passed by. I'm imagining a series. But I always imagine a series...

Robert The Drumm

This handsome profile belongs to model Robert, who posed at the Drawing New York session I attended tonight. I'm very keen to practice more with my live sketching—I seem to have slowed down my rendering times but I also know I'm taking more care with my sketches. You see, I found a lot of drawings I did back in the day at the Leslie Lohman Queer Drawing Salon, and I was appalled by my level of skill. I need to fix that.

Lean In

These tableau ideas keep coming but I wonder if I'll ever actually do them? Well, if anything, I'll have lots of poses to choose form if/when I compose one. He's not quite, but I definitely had Rick Owens in mind when I drew this guy. Maybe this is Rick's doppelganger cousin who's not as fashionably chic, lol

Mode Smile

Smiling just isn't in fashion, and so it isn't right for fashion illustration. But I'm still trying to find a way to render a big smile in a fashion illustration style without it looking cheesy... and I clearly have not succeeded yet. This looks like it would be better as a comic book character (but with better coloring).

Paintboy

Wanted to try a gouache technique again after discovering the NAtural Feel CR, Natural Feel Dilute and Natural Feel Dry brushes from Kyle Webster.

Jason at Gay Art NYC

I decided to try out a new drawing technique or two, as my recent contour style feels a bit undone and I also am working to really render better. I'd thought I'd use a technique I saw in an instructional video, tracing out the volumes before outlining the form, and it kinda worked!  Now I want to learn this technique more...

Jaime

I always thought my ex neighbor was a very good looking guy, and it's proving to be the reason it's so difficult to capture him. He insists it looks like him, but I'm not convinced yet. This was an hour worth of portraiture, and it makes me feel I'm not that good, when I can usually get a likeness better ina session where I'm in a room full of other people. What is it about drawing a friend along that makes it so harded for me than in a class situation?
