I was doodling while half asleep and he drawing started looking vaguely like JFK, Jr. This could turn into an interesting drawing if I develop it properly.

Strangeness 2

When I was growing up in Manila, while talking to friends on the phone I would doodle on the calendar next to the phones. Often, drawings done the day before would be built upon further, and I find I do the same kind of doodling now, except in digital format.

I was always a big fan of the Dr.Strange books, although never enough to draw him. I tried to draw his costume tonight and realized I didn't know exactly what it looked like. When I googled it up, I was determined to modernize it a bit... but then I lost interest.

Inktober ~ Movember

I was drawing something for Inktober and it became a Movember thing because I wanted to draw a sheriff-type character with a moustache.

What better way to celebrate Inktober than to do an ink (well, digital ink) drawing of an inked guy? Just a quickie though.

More reductive editing. Less is very often more. This is a detail of how I intend to reduce teh drawing, but I have a feeling I will need to retool the upper half.

Now that I've goten some of the details I wanted done out of the way, I can start deleting elements and get it to look more minimal. Yeah, the digital watercolor process is often more reductive with me, starting with something way over-rendered hen peeling back the layers and arriving at something that looks spontaneous.

Jonny Quest 2016

I was trying to draw a male model face in the current vein, and this face popped up as I was working. Combined with the light hair and the black turtleneck, I thought he looked like cartoon character Jonny Quest.

I drew this face earlier in the day, and I thought I was drawing an edgy young male model, but I kept getting edgy female instead, and I wasn't sure where to go. I'm still undecided if she looks like she's a trans version of the older son of Winona Ryder's character, whose name I can't recall.

Brush Play

I agreed to have drinks with my neighbor but she;s chatty and we ended up an hour longer than I thought I would be. Also much drunker. So, my drawing skills are somewhat impaired...

But I took out some old 'Nagel' brushes that I had downloaded about 6 years ago when I first started really focusing on painting digitally. I tested them out and man, they're so primitive compared to the brushes I use now. So I wasn't enthused enough to even finish this sketch or make it halfway decent.

Ernestoon, 40th Anniversary Edition

My friend Ernesto's birthday is coming up, and I know he loves the paper doll I made of him, so I updated it for his upcoming 40th with his current hairstyle, his tatts and an adjustment to his expression which I think is more of a likeness than previously.

I saw this post on Instagram and fell in love with its energy, and especially the black girl with the blonde updo. She inspired me to draw this (also partly based on the junior designer I'm training) using the Deliciously Dry Brush (guess it counts for Inktober?).

Developing my own techniques for painterly kitties. This one in a series of gouache brushes, which yes I realize I spelled wrong throughout the painting!  But hey, the kitties look good!

Daniel

I love a long face, and this model is one of my faves. He's probably more well known for his extensive tattoos but I love Daniel's face - he's got a look about him with those upturned mouth corners. Not the best likeness, but I was going more for a caricature, methinks.

I haven't finished this but I've been busy. So I'll just do a series for a tableau spanning a few seasons. Plus it gives me a chance to see how effective the new brushes I've been using might be on this piece, since I was a bit stumped how to finish it...

Brushing Up 2

Man, in my mind this experiment was something completely new, but it's really just another iteration of my rough fields of background color overlaid with pencils or inks. Still, I do like it.

Wet & Thirsty

I was watching a video for Thomas Keal, a YouTube personality with a penchant for exposing as much of his body as possible online. Under the flimsy excuse (not that I'm complaining)  of explaining his skincare regimen he proceeds to shower naked while being filmed, with a post-placed black box blocking his penis (which occasionally peeks its head for a split second, past its chastity graphics, which I think is wholly intentional. That tease!). I found some good forms to use as a model so I thought I'd try some looser brush tools in Photoshop.

I went out to have drinks with my former co-worker Maya, and I got so buzzed on mescal cocktails I was useless after that!  So this was made a day later (today) and is my makeup sketch.

Grinder Brush Line

I was doing brush stroke renderings for my co worker today and I wanted to see what the Grinder brush (which figured heavily in some of the renderings) would look like in a sketch. A rough one.

Lutzy

This sketch was inspired by a photo of Kellan Lutz, of all people. I don't think I've ever seen him in anything except just-about-naked tumblr photos.

Nik Kershaw 1985

This video of Nik Kershaw performing at Live Aid in 1985, shows him wearing a half-tucked oversized shirt with high-waisted loose, cropped pants. Just everything I want to wear right now. So I drew it.

Blue Lined

I decided to change the hairstyle  on yesterday's sketch and make it more contemporary, since I tend to default on my women's styling, since I'm no longer as up on women's fashions as I used to be. This is now an impression of the off-shoulder styling from Margaret Howell's SS17 show.

This is a bit late as last night I went out and in the craziness of the bombing/explosion in my neighborhood, things were a bit wonky traveling. Anyhow, I drew this before all that, just didn't get to post it.

(No Longer) Under The Influence

I actually liked yesterday's drawing, which I can barely recall because I was falling asleep at my desk last night (as I seem to do lately — working full time tires me out!). But upon second inspection today, I thought I could tweak it a bit, so voila.

As part of a birthday celebration, I had waaay too much wine than I usually do lately, so I'm surprised I actually got to draw. Of course, I may come back to it when I'm sober and think, what the hell!

And this is the other end of the tableau (at least for the men's stuff). I went back in and tweaked, as well as changed outfit details and colors so as not to look like the client's clothing.

So the clothes for the client were still to be presented and as such are secret, but I wanted to post the drawings I did so I altered them to take out the most identifiable details. So it can jus be another suit, and another denim shirt and pleated khakis. :)

Loosely

I think my fashion illustration style for women hasn't progressed, and is too stiff when fully rendered. So I'm trying to think of ways to  soften it up and still be fashion illustration, as opposed to some sort of fashionable portraiture.

I didn't really get to draw fashion illustrations the way I think I should, but actually defaulted to the way I tend to do. I need to find a new technique to elevate them more from the Vogue Patterns illustration style I tend to gravitate to.

I always liked this view of an extended leg. It stems from my mannequin days and seeing how poses that were made to be seen from up front also look great from behind. I'm thinking specifically Violeta Sanchez's Rootstein mannequin pose.

SO many drawings tonight, and so many revisions!  This is one of the faces I rendered, which shortly after I prepped for posting on the blog, I retooled completely. I realize my process involves painting everything to full-rendered perfection, and then realizing that that look is dated and oh so very Vogue Patterns, so I then go back and erase portions and make it more unfinished and contemporary. But this is before I retooled. I've not painted a black woman in my new digital techniques, in croquis mode, so I wasn't sure how to render the skin tone in a way consistent with the way I render white girls in watercolor. It took over an hour to get right!

I sometimes fall in love with details and I can't bear to erase them even if I think they're wrong for the drawing. But thankfully Photoshop allows you to save different versions so you can keep that detail in one document, should you ever want it.

I was drawing into the morning and then regrouped again to present the thumbnails this morning. So far so good, the client's client (who requested me, or at least my style, apparently) liked the first draft, so here's to completing it all. Still, it's Mercury Retrograde so I'd best not get cocky!  Here are two faces from teh array of models, one of which was completely redone, so it's safe to show.
