The more work I do on him, the less it looks like him, yet the more correct the work becomes. Ugh, no wonder I tend to leave it for later.

Yesterday's drawing was terrible. Today's is an improvement on hat file, but not by very much. For whatever reason, I'm trying to draw features I'm not necessarily drawn to draw, but what I see on actors and personalities whom I think are handsome but not o my usual taste.

It's been such a long and tiring week (I got sick and our offices moved to Brooklyn, which is a commute I haven't had to do in forever) that as I was drawing, I fell nodded off, and woke up thinking, huh, I didn't think I was drawing that. But I like him. It feels a bit naive in a way.

I was feeling a very 50s vibe after seeing a ot of vintage illos on Pinterest...

She was actually drawn on the 14th as a makeup sketch for the 12th, and as a complement for the "Salaryman" of the 13th's sketch. Complicated, huh?

I retooled an old sketch that didn't work, and now it feels so much better, although it could still be improved, I can see. But for now, here it is.

I think the one on the right has the right level of proportion and detail. The left one, while I tried to reduce it, still has too much detail o be as editorial. Ugh, I'm fighting my own tendencies

Old School Ink LIne

Happy 4000th Post! That's 4000 days I've been blogging. Wow, time flies—it's been over 11 years.

I've been playing with the ink brushes and mentally channeling illustrators I've seen in Pinterest, particularly Fred Greenhill whose work I always admired but never exactly wanted to emulate until now.Mostly because of his skill with his lines and figures, there was an easy elegance about him. I'm trying to se if I can develop a style of my own for inks with these digital brushes.

Proportions 2

My proportions have been especially off, in my view, when sketching oversized looks. I really need to hone in on the body underneath, so that the fabric just doesn't look huge and bloated. I like this sketch, but I think teh volumes could have a little less stiffness and be a little more relaxed.

I was feeling off about my fashion proportions. Even in the past 10 years I've been varying them a lot, it doesn't seem as innate as it once was. So I spent some time practicing, and working a looser ink illustration style inspired by an artist I found on Pinterest (whose work looks nothing like this, but inspired the looseness nonetheless). I'm gonna try sketching more in this vein trying to see where it leads.

I guess it would help if I had an idea what I was drawing before I just went ahead and doodled. That is a bizarre outfit. with that haircut.

Sketchbook Trial

I had the SketchBook app in my Mac but I don't recall using it at all before. I must have when I downloaded it, but the controls seem both familiar and unfamiliar. In any case, this is a sketch I did to explore the different tools and media. And boy is it terrible—that facial construction is SO OFF.

I spend some time refining some glovd hands for her. I've always been proud of my hands, but lately, I've noticed I've gotten too lax with them so I tend to do shortcuts a lot. Even if it's stylized I had to make sure these were okay, with slightly exaggerated but elegant fingers.

I was going to repost my Valentine's day Bunny mask girl for East Sunday, but I couldn't help myself when I opened up the file, and at first started to make minor corrections, which later lead to retooling it completely. I rather like where it went. So I made variants too.

Taxing

I spent all of this week getting my taxes together, and it was worse than I feared (strangely, predicted by Susan Miller on her astrology reading for me for this month) but not unexpeced. I went to a new tax preparer who was not cheap at all, but she made me feel comfortable and feel like I was in good hands. So I drew her while she did my tax prep.

I was having lunch in Chelsea and watching people out the window of eh restaurant I was in, and a boy passed by with very Timothee Chalamet hair. So I studied how it looked and decided to do a quick sketch of him.

So the "Curly Top sketch I did a few days ago was an experiment in constructing interesting faces, but I felt like the face I drew was a bit old and not hip enough to be model material. At first I thought the hair was too young and tried changing that, but I realized that the aesthetic of a tall, prominent nose and chin were the things dating the look. True enough, a younger, softer-featured face felt more au courant.

I practically redid his facial structure, retooling his lips, nose and jawline, plus added that bit of reflection on his glasses. It might no seem like a lot of work, but it's progress for me... especially since I have precious little time to draw!

Getting some traction on Innocent here. Hopefully I'll have a finished piece soon. My process often includes long periods of walking away from an illustration and coming back to i when the muse his. Not good for finishing things up, but the good news is I DO finish things up eventually. Mostly.

I posted two things on instagam in the past two days, both using the Deliciously Dry Brush from Kyle Webster's set. I took it out again today to try and make something new, laying it all out in that brush and the Fat Hatch. The sketch reminded me of a former co worker I nicknamed Danger Boy.

I'm not quite sure where to go with this drawing. The sexy body doesn't look quite right with that face or hair.

On second viewing I didn't love the face I did last night, but the ore lines I put on his face, the older he started looking, or rather, the more retro. And he got hairy. I was musing on Instagram that tomorrow's impending snowpocalypse made me think of staying home and being snuggly, so I drew a hairy young daddy type.

Curly Top

I'm attracted to men with curly hair. It must be because when I was younger and in high school, I fell infatuated with someone who treated my kindly, who had a head of dark curls, quite unusual for a Filipino.

I really enjoy the ink sketches with the Badass Ink Brush by Kyle Webster. It has that look of randomness that feels like classic ink sketches done hastily but masterfully. Even if I actually erase and redraw a lot, it looks very immediate.

Shuting

One of my favorite co workers at the office I've been contracting with likes to wear her sweaters over her hair. It's such a stylish thing to do methinks, plus she's really pretty, like an Asian Brigitte Bardot as drawn by Milo Manara or maybe Jason Brooks. So I tried to sketch her from memory, but I think I want to try and draw her from life. Consider this a study.

I rediscovered this old sketch and decided to clean it up a bit and post it on Instagram. Funnily enough, I was admiring the rough ink line of classic Lord & Taylor fashion illustrator Fred Greenhill, and this Grinder brush evokes some of those natural media strokes of his.

I decided I wasn't sure it shouldn't be another head receiving the fluid hair, but I'm not sure what to replace it with. So I corrected the anatomy a bit and made him somewhat more defined, althouhg I do want to still keep him model lanky.

I really don't have a plan. I kinda have a plan, but when I draw, I just see what it turns into versus trying to wrangle it into something I've pre-imagined. I might be terrible as a comicbook artist if I work this way... and can barely finish anything because i spend so much time designing at work, that I have nothing left creatively.

Inspiration is good—I kept working, just for the sake of being able to see what I create! I think it was good that I went to The Armory Show yesterday.  Even if I didn't see something that made me want to emulate the work as much as possible, i DID see a lot of things that made me think of being more creative and exploring more. I've recently felt so bound to my techniques, as well as trying to please a fickle social media audience, that I wasn't drawing for myself. Here's hoping I can keep the inspiration flowing.

I saw this image on Instagram and it made me think of this image which I drew immediately, and which I realized after the fact is influenced/based on a drawing by my friend and idol, Mel Odom. Funny how the mind processes things you've seen before and remixes it. There's nothing original anymore... or is it original that I took these various images and created one of my own that borrows from both but isn't either?

Trying to make the pose I did yesterday work as part of a scene, so I'm trying to imagine a Nolita weekend scene with people meeting up on a street corner, possibly outside a coffee shop.

I've been taking note of modern silhouettes on men on the street. I'm well aware and verse in terms of fashion and styling myself, bu I often forget to make the clothing on my drawings as current looking, I don't know why.

More Storm Doodles

Same exercise, different time as yesterday's post (which was really done earlier today, but posted for yesterday). Better with the mohawk, but that facial view is such a standard of mine it was easy to get in a more attractive state.

The idea was to draw without erasing. The first face started out nicely, but I put one wrong ink line on the mouth and blammo, ugly. Fortunately the follow-up body sketch was nice enough.

I guess that's what I'll name him since I was doodling him while wathcing teh oscars. I've been trying to draw more like I do on my desktop on my iPad, but I'm finding it difficult to make pieces at the resolution I want, and with teh brush quality I want. I found that out yesterday live at a nude sketch session and more so today. I gotta do some research and practice on this.

Thant said, "Oscar" ended up looking cute, but not he scale I thought he would be, so I had to retool his body...

I got to wake up early enough to rush over the the Gay Art drawing salon at The Center, but not early enough to prep and get a proper seat. I eventually settled down enough to draw, but not enough to get in a good groove.  These are the few sketches that turned out okay. The model Marco was new to drawing, but e was pretty ambitious with his poses, and he had an amazing body to draw. I may draw him again...
