Fancy

I was inspired by the goldfish I drew in yesterday's sketch. I thought of maybe mimicking the brushstrokes of traditional Japanese and/or Chinese artists who depict goldfish. I think it's a cross between a lionhead and a shubunkin (if I recall my goldfish varieties correctly) but I didn't have a reference so I'm not sure.

Can Barely Bear It

Been working like a dog, designing for the past 3 days, on very little sleep. So I'd say my energies are pretty spent, let alone my creative energies. So this is what you get (can't you tell the level of "No, not today" from my work these past three days? lol).

Auugh

I've been designing for two days straight on a 30+ page website that I foolishly agreed to try and do in 3 days. So I wanna run outside and do stuff, but I'm locked in front of my desk until tomorrow, trying to get things done, and keeping up with a sugar-rush diet of chocolate covered granola bars....

Brown Is Beautiful

What people seem to respond to when they see Zenaida is that she's just too damn happy, which is just as well. She's so damn proud to be who she is she has no problems being naked to the world (except for ag-string, or tanga, as we use to call it back home; and a pair of heels - she does like a little lift).

Shore Lines

This sketch is partly from a reference photo, partly just me drawing it in the way I'd like. I think having a reference helps you avoid your own standard lines, and in my case helps it look more natural. I love a natural pose, but when I draw it on my own without a reference it can look a bit stiff. Her face is all mine, though- The original reference had her looking in a completely different direction. I like how it looks like she and her man are having a conversation by the shore.

Gotta get all these thumbnails done! They're all fairly rough but when they're cleaned up they won't be much more filled in, as the client has selected a pencil outline style.

Jury Duty

Bored at jury duty and saw a guy drawing another juror and I decided to draw him. It's kinda like those repeating mirror images. I wanted to show him the sketch but I wasn't sure if he would be friendly...

Took on a new drawing project that won't pay much, but will be on a beautiful website (I know and trust the designers' taste levels). This week might be all about rough thumbnails.

I have to make a few very simplistic illustrations for a website so while I get my bearings (because I have quite a few projects all tumbling together this week/weekend) I'm starting with the thumbnail stages whenever I get a moment.

Actual Doodling

I spent 2 hours on a stultifying conference call, and I did what I could to best pass the time - I doodled.  And on actual paper with a pen, no less!  What struck me as interesting is my default doodle was a fashion illustration. I tried to draw Phoenix of the X-men (who used to be my favorite subject) but, well... I was bored.

Sidewalk Past Midnight

I was walking home late (also the reason this post is late) after watching the second Hunger Games movie at my friend's boyfriend's place in the East Village and I saw a guy standing talking to his girlfriend, and I just liked his stance.

Slope Shouldered Coat

I've been obsessed with this style all winter, and have been looking for a men's version to wear since last year (albeit in a more oversized version back then). I see many a version when I walk to the gym, but this one Asian girl struck me with what she was wearing, as I had an image in my head to draw her. Granted, the drawing I saw in my head was a lot less fashion illustration-y, but what I like about doing it sketchy like this is it allows me to finish as quickly as if I would do it with natural media. Or in other words, in about 15 minutes or so.

It's interesting how comfy doing these watercolors feel, and how much more natural they feel to me. Compared to how I was illustrating before (when I was just drawing from my head), it's looking and maybe feeling much, much looser.

Gibson Gal

I've been watching the series Mr. Selfridge, and while I can't stand Jeremy Pivens' acting in it, I am intrigued by the period setting. Not my favorite looks, but still, interesting. I kinda hate Lady Loxley, but I can't seem to get her hairdo out of my head. Not that this looks like her, much older in fact. But fun with more of Kyle Webster's brushes.
