Projectra

I found an old file I had last opened on October 16, 2002, a drawing of the Legion of Super Heroes character Princess Projectra. I thought I would try and clean it up and finally finish it, but I found myself changing her features, because I found the face that I drew to be a bit dated. I have no doubt that years from now, the face I draw today will seem dated too. Faces do tend to be of their time too... The blue one is the older one. Seems I even made her look younger...

Hello Deer

I wrapped a Xmas gift but only used recycled older wrappings and trimmings I'd saved. I ended up with an aqua theme as a result, so to tie it all together I used some old watercolor tests as a accent. Since it wasn't Christmassy enough I decided to draw a reindeer for the enclosure card. Well, paint one.

I think the anatomy of the pose has improved a bi, but I'm trying desperately not to make it look like he's sitting on the toilet. And you can't unsee that now, can you?

I got this pose in my head and tried to render i without a model, but my knowledge of anatomy is pitifully inadequate for teh task. I have the idea of it in my head, but am struggling to get it out. I like the rough better than when it gets more fleshed out, maybe because it looses the flow and spontaneity, while the more details need to be perfectly right or else they're just inaccurate. Argh.

Perfecto, Not So Perfecto

The brush was called Perfecto, but I think I wanted something else for a face. Still, it might be useful for other washier ideas. I tried adding detail with the Detail 1 brush, but I don't love how it all turned out. Ah well.

Kyle Webster sent out a new brush and I tried it out directly. Its always fun using new materials, digital or not.

Good and Languid

I DO need to add at least one more to this series! I always liked a distant look on my gals, and I suspect it's because I like the way mannequins look like they're somber, and kinda drugged.

Hair Flow 3

This is a bit of a throwback from over a year ago. I did two passes on a photo form the Lanvin menswear SS2015 lookbook but I wasn't happy with the hair rendering I did.This one is better, but I'm still not sure it's a technique I'm satisfied with enough to replicate.

Thinking of Kansai

My friend Max is obsessed with Kansai Yamamoto, and he wasn't even alive to experience the height of Kansai. Heck,I was there and I liked his stuff, but I cant recall what it looked like now. So I did a quickie sketch of an Asian-inspired face.

Pencil Kid 3

Strange how the sketch you had no intention of turning into anything significant will someties become a nice piece that you try to finish off as well as possible. He turned out rather nicely.

I spent so much time tonight at a party that I didn't have time to get home and draw... so this is a quickie. Except I retooled it a lot in the morning so it' started developing beyond a quickie. He kinda reminds me of a young Tom Cruise in a way, which is a bit distressing because I'm not a fan of Tom Cruise.

Pencil Kid

I started out drawing a girl with the a pencil brush, but quickly decided he should be a young-ish male model. I'm too sick to really do much... seem to have come down with a bad cold that's making the rounds. And my joints are all achey... ugh.

Soft Curves

Went to a mannequin showroom party earlier tonight and had a great time hanging out with friends and friends friends, and dissecting mannequin collections. So I tried to draw one of the poses but I didn't have much luck, although using this "oil soft and smooth brush" is pretty fun.

The semi-ant's eye view has been very popular in Fashion photography in recent years, so I'm constantly angling my drawings that way. And when it's a (nearly) naked male body, it's always a sex thang. I love me a demi god...

Ben's Hair Again

My favorite show right now is London Spy, and Ben Wishaw is a joy to watch. He's not necessarily classically handsome, but man, he's adorable and compelling. And he has the best hair! I drew him almost two years ago, based an impression of his google image results, and I wasn't far off from his look even if I didn't get a likeness. This isn't much of a likeness either, but I'm playing with a chunky oil finish and will refine it as I get my colors in.

He's got a long face kinda like Benedict Cumberbath. Maybe they should play brothers on something.

Zara's Ecommerce

I'm not a fan of how Fast Fashion has affected both the fashion industry and the planet, but I have to admit that Zara does a great job of creating what they do, and how they present it. Their website has great editorial style shots of all the clothing, and I often find great poses to draw from. This is one such pose, an unfinished study done in advance of my Thanksgiving Day coma, which I predict I will have sooner than later.

Joe On My Mind

I've been watching Survivor mostly because of the hot guys. Current hottie is Joe, all hair and abs and easy swagger. This sketch doesn't look like him at all, but it was inspired by his look. Hey, I'm working form memory, so as a sketch it's okay. :)

Scribbly Nude

I'm distracting, and multitasking too much. So I can't draw too well while I have sixty gajillion tabs open that all need my reading, so I can redesign my site properly. ugh.

Color Profile

I sketched a new Facebook profile pic to go with the narrative triptych I did last week, to update me from all the red, white and blue that we did last week in solidarity with Paris. So I went with the soft, muted pastels that are popular in design right now.

Whoops, a few minutes late to posting. I got into a troll situation on a Facebook group. I realize that FB is much worse than I thought because I was never in a public geek group before. Imagine my surprise getting some really random types unrelentingly trolling. Anyhow, I need to have a sorbet and drew Dream Girl Nura Nal (from the Legion).

Mask and the Thunderbear

My two friends; names just seemed to be begging for the comic book character treatments.

I had a friend and his friend over for drinks last night, so I got too drunk and didn't watch the time and ended up missing my post window yesterday. My friend's friend's name translates to Thunderbear in English, which I think is awesome!  And since he's a built male model I figured he needed a superhero alter ego. Voila, ThunderBear!

Night Girl 2015

I joined a Legion of Super Heroes group (two of them, actually) on Facebook, so to introduce myself (as I was asked to do by the moderator who approved my membership) I uploaded some old sketchs from 2001. The resulting attention and discussion was pretty overwhelming, so I thought of finding other old Legion related sketches to post. I found my Night Girl 2010 post and decided that before I posted it, I would need to rework it a bit. So I did... not just a little bit but a lot of tweaking. Never satisfied with my own work, it seems.

Continued with a third panel. The triptych turned out as I had planned. I kinda want to keep extending it.

I had an idea to continue the 'Chunky Lines and Pastels" image from a few days ago, but adding more figures in an editorial way. My friend Lamont claims that fashion illustration is best when it has a narrative, something I'm not sure I usually add. Well, I'm definitely doing one here. Albeit with a very different style.

I wanted to draw something for Paris tonight, so I thought of a chic, French girl. Thinking of Paris in light of the horrible terrorist attacks from earlier today...

Chunky LInes And Pastels

Strangely enough, I was inspired by going through Zara's website. They have amazingly shot product pages, with each item modeled like an editorial. So I was a bit more inspired to add a narrative to a simple sketch. Actually, I was going to lay out a pose and composition to render more realistically later, but I had a really thick, basic brush on in Photoshop, and as I lay lines down, I was inspired to see how it might turn out. Kinda fun.

The colors are from the very trendy copper, grays, mint greens and dusty pinks so popular in home furnishings today. I'm inspired by the palette that Hawkins New York uses in their shop up in Hudson.

Dark Olive

There was a hot black chef cooking dinner for us this evening at a friend's friend's birthday party in the neighborhood. He looked nothing like this drawing, but he inspired it!

Strokes

Just needed to post after a long dinner, and 'strokes' seemed like an open enough topic to cover whatever I drew up... which turedn out to be elephant-wide cargo pants. I like teh idea: I've been wearing an M65 leather jacket my friend Robert Geller designed, and when it's warmer (like it was earlier this week) I wore an old, 'designer' version in olive drab cotton by H&M. So I have utility pockets on my mind.

Brush Test

There are so many brushes, and so many possible approximations of watercolor. It's quite a bit of work trying to recognize what brushes might approximate what effects.

I needed to revisit this because I wasn't satisfied with how I drew her eyes. Will post as soon as I photograph it.

Languid Stance

It's kinda bad posture, but it's also a stance that seems very modern, so when I saw this pic from 'Fear of God's IG feed, I thought I'd use it as a model for a drawing. It's a pose I've done before but theres something about the S shape of his slouch that makes it particularly slouchy.

Not So Strange

I was inspired by looking at Kevin Wada's blog to try and 'fashionize' a super hero. I used to do that all the time back in the day, so it's not really stealing his thunder, but I haven't really wanted to do it nor have I done it much these past few years. But I also never really did a guy, so I thought about Dr. Strange in some Lemaire-like outfit. It really doesn't feel like Strange, but it's becomes something else entirely... some fashion-y turn-of-the-century type with his skinny moustache.

Movember

My new favorite brushes, the Natural Edge series from Kyle Webster, bears study and practice. I think it can achieve really beautiful effects and just need to find the best way to utilize it.
