Stances 3

It's interesting drawing these. I have no trouble swiping poses from any resource (And I bought tons of magazines, as well as am swiping from ecommerce sites) because in the end, it's about capturing a vibe and not a face.

Stances 2

This time using Kyle Webster's pencil brushes. I'm not sure I'm seeing anything better than my usual brushes so far, but I'm only just starting with finding out about them...

Stances

Got a new commission and I'm a bit out of my comfort zone with some of the content, so I have to both sketch a lot of samples as well as immerse myself in research.

Happy T-Day

Upstate in Hudson for Thanksgiving so I'll upload a sketch over the weekend when I return home.

edit: So I decided to just go with the stances sketches I need to work on this weekend, because that's the project that needs tending. But I like the color blocking idea that I just did on a whim / accidentally...

O by H

I found a new designer via Instagram, O by H, and after perusing their look book I was inspired to do a really quick sketch in the style of Barnaby Ward. I did it with Ward's kind of 'naive' line but incorporating the sharp, unlined silhouettes that I've been favoring lately, which he has in his style too.

Hair Flow 2

I have not developed a technique yet for rendering hair that's this kind of style: lots of locks, and an emphasis on the flow of the waves and curls. I love this kind of hair - we didn't get it back home, and it fascinates me because it's got so much movement. I'm pleased enough with the skin, not so much with the hair or my attempt at matte nylon (the collar). Using the Webster brushes, I'm having to rethink my workflow, so soon after establishing one with the brushes I developed a technique with on my own. Ack.

Surf On Turf 10

I've been avoiding it, but I have to finish this up soon. And I did make a lot of headway finally! Now I just need to finish up the series with a few more sketches...

Hair Flow

I loved the hair styling on this model from a recent Lanvin menswear pre-collection look book. It's the kind of hairstyle that looks so fun right now, but I think 20 years from now we'll look at it and go, what were they thinking?? Ah, fashion. For now, it's fun. Plus I didn't want to work on any of my previous sketches so a new quickie it is.

Color Play

Pulled up an old sketch file and played with it, adding some newer colors and just playrimenting (yeah I just made that word up) with color combinations.

Thad 6

I can't leave well enough alone! Arrrgh. But I have to keep walking away and coming back... tonight especially. I just can't seem to see correctly now, everything is looking wrong. But of course, if I look at it tomorrow, I'll probably see a lot of what's right.

Thad 5

I'm liking where the paints are going, although I think I've gone a bit too portrait and not fashion illustration. That said, I intentionally left out finishing the eyes because my photo reference has the model bathed in a neon light, and I can't tell what his eye color is.

View to a Thrill 3

In comics, you can just draw a line drawing and it may or may not need to focus on a good face, mostly because it's part of a narrative. With a single figure image, like this, the face is all important to get just right since it draws the viewer in. And I thought the eyes could use some deepening here... image to come

Snarl

I remember when I just loved drawing this kind of a shaded face. It was emblematic of the X-men Storm and Phoenix getting their righteous anger and power on, and I fantasized about it for so long. Nowadays, it's lost its luster, but I think there's a twinge of nostalgia when I try to draw it again...

Thad 4

I seem to have some sort of art ADD, don't I, posting different things each day, spending bits of time with some then veering to others, never quite finishing anything? But I gotta, so I'm working more on Thad. Image to come (as soon as the bourbon wears off).

Man Bun

Decided to go natural with today's sketch and pulled out a sheet of cardboard and a pencil and just constructed a face. The hair came later...

Selling Marni

This sales associate at Marni in the West Village was the first person I photographed for this series. Funnily enough I finished the girl from Acne first, in a very similar outfit. It's the zeitgeist! Or maybe it's my taste in outfits?

I seldom finish a drawing from start to finish when it's digitial. Usually I let it sit a day or more before I return to it, and then I play with it a bit by bit.I can certainly finish a piece on the spot if I wanted to, but I usually am distracted by tons of stuff. I realize this sketch is also way late, as I took the reference photo in the Summer and now I wonder if the sales person is still even there at the store!

Zenaida, Goddess of Plenty

I was at a dinner party last night so I posted a holding post so I could draw and upload later. And I just thought, oh, make it about Zenaida.  I often relegate Zenaida to a quickie that I can churn out when I need something to post for the day, but this drawing just became sooo fun! It made me try out new techniques and upped the ante a bit on my sketchier renderings.

I was thinking Thanksgiving here, and the Venus of the Rice is bringing the grain, and plenty of it! She makes me smile. :)

Noah Blue

Redux! I wanted to post this image I did on Instagram for a Throwback Thrusday, but ended up retooling it because reducing it in size for a cell phone screen kinda changed the silhouette too much for my liking. Funny how a tiny bit of chin hair seems to make a huge difference for me, not that you know what I'm talking about because I'm only showing a part of it.

Puffer

I got an idea while on the treadmill earlier tonight and I thought I'd draw it just like I used to: as a sketch that doesn't have to be a 'piece.' This is just part of it. Some vaguely futuristic, quilted puffer jacket (or what barely passes for one)(maybe it's more of a shrug)(a turtleneck shrug). Oh, and a leather bra, with a ribbon tie on the front. He he.

Thad 3

As I firm up the pencils, I wonder if I'll even paint this... which is why I'm totally playing with the painting style...

Wow, this is, if my numbering system is correct, my 2,700th blog post. Can you imagine? That's over 2,700 drawings (remember that many of my posts have multiple drawings posted). Of course, not every posted drawing is completely uniques, so there's room for debate about how many drawings I actually have done, but hey, as far as posted drawings are concerned, I have over 2700!

View To A Thrill 2

When I get into a drawing I start to have feelings for it. And if I'm trying to draw something sexy then I hope I get turned on even a little at the thought of what I'm trying and hopefully at what I'm seeing myself draw. I kind of felt that a little bit with this one. I guess that's a good sign.

Also I don't think I've drawn a bearded man in a while. I mean, I have recently but they were always based on people. This might be the first where I'm trying to create a hot bearded guy. I think he could be hot!

View To A Thrill

I have so many drawing projects on my plate and what do I do? Start a completely new one. Except it feels like this has been percolating fora while, because when I brought up reference photos from my stash, I had SO many already mimicking this particular pose. So I gotta do it!

Blue Coat

Too buzzed to draw anything properly so here's a digital watercolor doodle.

Pencil Experiment 2

When I went rooting through my old files for this blog, in search of images I can Instagram. I came upon this old fave. I've noticed that as recently as a couple of years ago I really didn't know how to draw eyes set in the forehead properly. Every time my old drawings would come up on my screensaver (because it would play building collage of all the images I have in my blog folder), I'd wince at how bad those eyes were rendered, and how I didn't even know it!  Arrrgh!! So I opened up this one and corrected it, because I like it a lot otherwise.

Continuing the portrait. It's always interesting drawing new people because you wonder how well you're doing.

Slouchy Walk Study

I saw this shot of some fashionistas on their way to (or from?) a destination, and the silhouette plus the stance of this guy was too perfect not to sketch. It's rough but I want to learn how to just draw this particular kind of attitude, from the forward slouch of the face to the sturdy landing of the front leg...

Menswear Monday: Acne Sweater Redux

I found this old drawing while looking for things to post on Instagram. Why make new ones when I have literally thousands  (approaching 3,000, to be exact) of older drawings to chose from here? I, of course, couldn't leave it as was, so I went in and cleaned it up quite a bit. I like the graphic quality and the fashion look is now peaking in menswear so might as well say I riffed on it 3 years ago. ;)
