Offline Doodling 2: Top Knot

I did more doodles at my desktop, not because my computer was still dead (it got better) but because I had started doodling and so I might as well continue. Isn't that always the way with doodling? Add on.

McCoif 3

I started liking the face but hating the hair, which was exactly the reason I started drawing this damn thing, so I tried a different hairstyle to see if I could rework the look into something that worked better for the face. I feel like I can spin this face as being some sort of sensitive edgy musician type, or it could be a Tilda-Swinton-esque trans man.

Offline Doodling

Was locked out of my computer at work, unable to work. So I pulled out my sketchbook and drew the first thing that came to mind.

McCoif 2

Yesterday's face had to becompletely redrawn. Completely!  And I'm still not done. Ah, the perils of inventing faces when you've not got all the fundamentals of facial construction (although I do think I fake it well).

McCoif

I liked the hair at Alexander McQueen's show today. There was something both 70s about the cut with its longer back and sides, but the slicked back styling also made it look Lord of The Rings elfin.

Still Lazy With The Shows 2

My attentions have been focused elsewhere—on work, on shopping, on working out, anything but my drawings. I wonder why? So I'm using the shows as an excuse to doodle. This hairstyle—which I've been drawing on and off for like 2 years now— is still ruling the runways .

Lazy With The Shows

The Paris menswear shows are well underway, and I'm actually quite excited about a few collections and new directions. But not, it seems, excited enough to draw them. I seem to be lacking a lot of energy to draw in any detail. Even last night when I sketched I had no desire to work on a likeness, and instead when really quick and immediate.

Parson's Fashion Illustrators Gathering

A fashion illustrator friend from LA who teaches fashion illustration invited a bunch of NY fashion illustrators to take part in a live sketch session at Parsons. I got to meet Sara Singh! I as a bit tired form last night and today's long all-day interview process, but I still wanted to go. I didn't too terribly well, but I don't think I did so badly. Funny, these sessions aren't as satisfying as they used o be and I don't know why.

Walking In Late

Ugh, I totally forgot to draw yesterday because I was prepping my portfolio all week and especially last night, for a job interview I had today. So while looking online at the newest runway looks form the Paris men's shows, I loved Rick's high-waisted wide legs. I've already been drawing that stuff on my own, but nice to see it in reality, as well as by the inimitable Rick Owens. So this is a quick makeup sketch for yesterday.

Deep v 4

It's a case of overworking things, I think. I kept trying to improve the face but it turns out the immediacy of my initial rendering was better than these overthought successors. Fortunately I have a few versions I can go back and rework. The problem is I keep going back and reworking.

Deep V 3

The differences don't seem that much but there's a lot of cleaning up going on under the hood—lines cleaned up, colors given sharper edges, that sort of thing. But I'm not sure the updates are improvements just yet. Damn this process!

Deep V 2

I dunno what it is but I don't have the energy to work on my drawings lately. I think I design so much at work that I just deplete all my creative juices, and when comes the weekend, all I want to do is relax. Well, at least I got to work a bit on this face, which is turning out nicely, I feel.

Hudson Pride

I went up to Hudson to hang out with friends again but it was in the middle of their Pride celebrations so I didn't have time to draw anything until the next day. And then all it was was a bad sketch of a rose for my host/friend whom I told about Madame Pompadour Roses because they resembled peonies, but that I couldn't find them anymore. So the sketch was an addition to the name of the flower that she said she would try and find. Nothing too exciting so far as drawings ar concerned (but the trip was a lot of fun).

Subway Style 2

I decided to redraw her completely. And add her mom (or at least I think that was her mom).

Subway Style Too

I was riding home from Brooklyn last week and these three young guys sat in front of us in the train. They looked great, like what real, good looking kids look like when they're not portrayed by models, hehe. This was one of them.

Subway Style

I saw a young Chinese girl on a train, accompanied by her mother. I had to snap a pic because her style was so impeccably simple and laid back, with her bib front men's shirt and shorts plus heavy, chunky-soled boots. Very trendy.

Fleshing Out

I often start with the outlines of a face, but I thought I'd let the form start to dictate how a drawing proceeds.

Whitespace 5

So I thought to myself, I'm drawing this somewhat provoative pose—because he's all spread-eagled—but what does it look like without the pants? Now we know.

Sunday, June 11, 2017

Whitespace 4

I thought the model should have a different head pose—and different, longer 70s hair.

Deep V

I got a few inspirations today from my trip to Casa News in the West Village, and it resulted in a quick sketch and color study thats more realized than I usually do, but I wanted to nail down my impressions right away.

Phone-y Too

I actually was able to take several angles of the guy on his phone leaning against the Apple Store, so I had a few views of what is nowadays a typical pose or situation. But it's fun to draw.

Phone-y

Saw this hot guy on the side of the Apple Store just engrossed in his phone, and I liked his stance. Its' a stance typical of people nowadays as they focus only on their handhelds instead of the rest of the world.

The Goddess Alek, Done

When inspiration hits, finish quickly! Well, this was fun, mostly because I don't have much vested in this style anymore, so I can just do it as I wish. Frankly, it's rougher than I would like it to be if I were indulging in comic book art again, but it is what it is.

The Goddess Alek 2

I kept at her in the past two hours. It's fun drawing in an old(but also updated) comic book style. I'm discovering how my years of drawing in other techniques is affecting my old stye. I'm thinking this looks a lot like my Goblin Queen drawing I did  the last time I really drew her. I hate the arms, though. Those ones aren't happening as easily as I used to draw Phoenix. Is it because I know more about arm anatomy, and still feel like I haven't gotten it down yet? Uggh, sometimes knowledge is not your friend...

The Goddess Alek

Alek Wek walked for the Balenciaga show recently, and also turned up in her runway look at the CFDA awards earlier tonight. I had an image of her as Storm in Balenciaga, so I thought I'd give it a whirl.

Current Mood 11.10.16 part 6

I had to completely redraw his hands. My proportions were—and still are—kinda off.

Whitespace 3

I wasn't satisfied with the facial position and the overall look of the guy, so I've repositioned him (and and again). This isn't fully rendered yet as it often changes drastically when I try to finalize the face (when I'm inventing one and not using a photo reference) but it has the energy. We'll see if I can follow through and realize it properly.

This entry is for Saturday the 3rd, as I was late to posting.

Whitespace 2

Am both trying to create the picture that's still very clear in my head... but also going with the flow of creating as I make interesting 'mistakes' that lead the drawing elsewhere.

Sleepyhead 2

I was looking for a drawing to post for Throwback Thursday, and I kinda was surprised how nice this one I did just a scant month ago was. Sometimes I wish I just stuck to one style and really gotkno0wn for it, but I like to do so many things. I suppose it's like my fashion style too—there's a general sensibility, but a range of ways to express it.

Anyhow, just a few reeeeally minor tweaks, but I like the tweaks.
