Sneer 13

And so my last drawing for 2018 is this ongoing  painting, stage 13 at this point, of my friend Ernesto. Here's to finishing this early in 2019!

Making A Scene

I started with a guy looking into the distance while he zipped up his pants then I decided o give him something to be looking at. This could be one of those Tom of Finland style scenarios.

Sneer 12

I would love to finish this in 2018 so I'm working on it.

Stumble

I came upon this pic of model Harry Goodwin on Instagram, and I loved the attitude of the image so much, I tried to capture it from memory (well, after a couple of glances at it) to portray its very spontaneous, "I'm-sorta-dancing-drunk" feel to it. The photo still did a better job, but I don't mind this drawing. The face turned out okay considering it's not taken directly from the photo.

Leaps

I was watching Top Chef on my ipad, so I picked up the nearest sheet of paper and a pen and started doodling these leaping figures. Bad anatomy.

Coupling

I was doodling and decided to try and draw an interacting couple, not always as easy as a single figure. But I do like the laughing guy on the left. The one on the right needs a bit more love...

Look Over Your Shoulder 2

This was definitely a piece that pretty much finished itself, it just came to life spontaneously. But even when that happens its always nice to take a beat to let it rest and come back to it a bit later and correct any minor details. I fixed up the shading as well as things like the ear folds.

Here Kitty, Kitty

I decided to draw my local comic book guy a Kitty in her current costume (well, with some minor modifications—hate the belt in this one) as a Christmas present. It was both fun and weird to draw a comic book character on paper—it felt familiar AND foreign because I haven't drawn this kind of extemporaneous sketch on paper in years. But I don't think I did too badly. I even knew that I didn't have enough space after sketching out her head so I changed the angle to fit, and it turned out okay methinks. Bad photo, though, but I forgot to take a better one before I gave it to Kyle.

Look Over Your Shoulder

This one was a spontaneous, continuous experiment that worked out nicely, I think. ALthough I feel like I've seen it before.

Train Face

I tried to sketch a face while waiting on the subway platform for the F train on my way to Soho today, to buy my friend Rainer's Christmas present. I started the face out then did a lot more on the phone at home. All the lighter green elements were done on the phone with my fingers, while the darker green tones were elements and adjustments I made in Photoshop later.

Walking Away

I saw a guy in the subway station, up ahead of me on the floor between trains, and I liked his proportions in his outfit. I didn't quite capture the outerwear, but he had a nice oversized jacket over cropped black pants.

Another Brush Kitty

File this under styles I'd never thought I'd try. This rather retro looking brushwork just happened on its own, maybe with a bit of help from the mask once it was rendered.

Brush Kitty

The new-ish kid who works at my regular comicbook store said the nicest thing to me on Tuesday, saying he liked our interactions and wished there was more of them than the usual "nice 4 minutes". It was one of the most straight forward yet charming things Ive heard form a straight guy for, like, ever. So in the course of my talking to him I told him about my Kitty Pryde costume, and he mentioned that Kitty is his fave X-man, so I thought I might do him a little drawing. Not this one, though. I gotta do a more comic book-style sketch.

Street Pink

I did a quick sketch of a streetwear fit, in the millennial blush pink that still pervades.

Shouldered Too

I was watching Top Chef on my computer and I wanted o doodle while watching, so I drew on some cardboard backing sheets I had saved from work. These sheets that were used to back a proof I had received, but they inexplicably sent too many. So why not recycle/repurpose?

Street Art

I often see things at a glance and imagine something else was there, before realizing what that thing actually was. It's a bit of mistaken identity inspiration. I'm not sure this color study counts as a drawing for the day, but it's certainly a painting for the day, something I saw while glancing at a monitor inside a store while I passed said store by in the rain, so I stopped and painted it on my iPhone so as not to forget it. And anyhow I added a sketch of my figure passing it by, just so that I can say there's a drawing there at least.

Mariano

Small world: a guy I noticed at Amazon a couple of weeks ago turns out to be our nude model on Saturday. Had a great time drawing him despite not being at the top of my game. A lot of my proportions felt off, and I think I need to work bigger if I want to get in the details I want...

Shouldered

Got an idea for a sketch, and here's a sketch of that sketch, which will hopefully looking better than this rough idea lol

Askance 3

I decided to add another guy. I think this can be a fun drawing/composition.

Gabriel at the LL Prince Street Project

One of my favorite models, Gabriel, was posing at the more erotic LL session on Wednesday, so I went over to draw him. I had trouble all night getting a satisfactory face, and I wonder if I just can't see the details the way I used to, now that my vision is eroding and I need higher-graded glasses? I sat dead center but at the furthest end from the stage, so I kept trying to get more detail but it wasn't anything I could easily pick out. I'll have to sit closer next time.

We post drawings on the walls so that everyone—and especially the model— can go around the room and see people's work. Consider it analog sharing!

Askance 2

I worked a bit on the anatomy. It's not really obvious but the adjustments are there... I've some ideas for how this should go...

Shawn

I didn't do too well on his face but I had a great time drawing Shwan's poses at a drawing sesh with John MacC's session at The Freehand Hotel.

The Long Arm 8

After making a concerted effort to study the musculature of an arm, I'm making a bit more progress on old pieces. Although this guy is a looooong way from when I started him! Ugh, need to finish out a few guys before year's end!

Askance

This seems to be a fairly common pose online nowadays. I wonder if it has anything to do with people photographing themselves from iPhones on a lower surface? I like it because it's an ant's eye view and there's deffo a certain eroticism to seeing a man crotch first. Just a rough sketch for now.

Cocky

I was shopping on Asos when I saw an image of a model sitting wearing a hoodie. I decided he should have no pants.

Marello

I was cruising through Davide Marello's feed on Instagram and felt so inspired I tried to do something just with the idea of 'chic' in mind.

Ink Profile

I saw an image with a red, black and blue color story and thought I'd do that in a silhouette with those colors, but when I drew it the ink lines just begged to be left alone. Sometimes learning how to draw better is about knowing when to stop drawing.

Ink Doodles

Just playing with the gouache magic brush. Sometimes the a brush works better for rendering other media than the one it was intended for. Although I'm not quite sure what this one resembles. Plain ink on textured paper?

Underpainty 2

I do like how painterly this can get. He reminds me a bit of Ioan Gruffud.

Sunday, December 2, 2018

Underpainty

I've decided to try my hand again at digital gouache, after bing inspired by a less studio-style digital illustrator's use of underpainting in her own work. I always think in terms of applied color covering layers completely, but figured I'd try a bit of underpainting and see what I think.

Morning Duo

I decided to go to the Saturday morning session of the Gay Art group I sometimes attend, but I was a bit disappointed. Aside form a hangover I was nursing from my big party of the night before, I wasn't particularly inspired by the models, and had even forgotten I'd drawn one of the couple before.

Angles

The silhouette piece made me think of other angles I could draw, but this one is pretty much something I feel I've already done before. I explored it a bit but I don't know if it's worth developing.

Sexy Side Eye

I saw a pose online that I liked, but had to extrapolate it a different way, shifting the direction and changing the guys face. It's always interesting constructing a face, and seeing what forms, but then tweaking to see what other kinds of faces form. It's really not as intentional as one might think, more like happenstance that you learn to direct and edit as it goes along...

Nurse On The Side

I went to get my flu shot today and the one of the nurses was facing away from me, and I got to study his silhouette from the side.

Silhouette, Also

The hairy guy I drew the other day was a quicker drawing to finish, but the actual pose I think I saw in my head was more akin to this twisting guy, who took a lot of figuring out and pose references to validate the musculature I initially drew without references.

Coat Shoulder

I based this guy off of a face on Instagram, where teh angle of the head and shoulder determined everything. I wasn't too happy with how the coat and body turned out, but it's good for now.
