Mike 2

Needed to add his cigarette otherwise it wouldn't be him! But using my reference pics I started aging him because I had to add the details and proportions of his clothing. Still, it's what I know him to look like.

Mike

I did another FaceTime session with another out of town friend, and this one was easier from the experience, but  more difficult because the connection was blurry. But it's interesting what's happening as I adjust it - I broke down and cried just like when I did Erwin's portrait. I'm seeing the passage of time in his face, but what I put down on paper and what resonates with me as being right, is a younger version of him that I remember.

Clickbait

I noticed my more traditional stuff is not getting many clicks on Instagram, so I'm conducting an experiment about what might gather Likes. I'm pretty sure a more comic-book style drawing of a naked man qualifies as clickbait, but we shall see.

Zappie 3

Because I can't leave well enough alone!! But I think this looks like my friend Jo. It's amazing how much she didn't resemble herself from the live sketch! This isn't perfect, but it's better. I really am a slow burn. I wish I was more talented (or maybe that's skilled?) that I can get a likeness off the bat. I used to think I could, but I think that's with a comic book level of linework, which is more minimal...

Zappie 2

My digital workflow has definitely affected my regular sketching - I act as if I can put any lines down and corrected it later with a command Z!  Well, Command Zappie maybe, because I'm going back in and fixing the sketch because I definitely got some features wrong. Fortunately I made a couple of screengrabs to refer to.

Zappie

Gonna do a live Skype sketch with my friend Joanne. Never did one before, but I'll post a pic of it when it's done. Edit: here it is. I have doubts.

Coy 6

This is a difficult one. As I'm drawing this model, I'm not liking her individual features but overall I recall her as being quite beautiful. I guess I'm going through my process of rendering each feature, then I will edit it down to make the likeness into a (hopefully) good drawing.

Croquis Mademoiselle

I've been admiring my Facebook friend Renaldo's fashion sketches, because I seem to have forgotten my old fashion sketch proportions. So I'm practicing.

Coy 5

I need to get a move on with this piece. I ant to have it ready by September 14th.

Birthday Delay

I got so drunk last night t my friend Robby's birthday party that I am so hung over today, I haven't the wherewithal to draw well. Hence this. Although technically, since I adjusted his portrait a little more, that could qualify as today's drawing.

Loose Resemblance, Done

Or at least I think it is, especially if I plan on gifting it to my friend today.

Max Live

I did a portrait of my friend Max today, and while it took a bit longer (30 minutes, which seems to be my average for these lately) I think this one turned out the best. Well, after Erwin's. But it stems from my knowing Max's face pretty well, having drawn him numerous times before. But it's also because he stood really still and he's a good model. Although methinks he learned that live modeling is a lot harder than say, doing a fashion presentation.

Loose Resemblance 2

Wasn't gonna just stop there now, was I? I had to get on and develop it a bit more yeah.

Loose Resemblance

Trying to do a portrait of a friend in a way that is natural, and unforgiving. Basically I'm laying down color fields and trying to adjust them without erasing, to be a portrait that will resemble my friend Robby, whom I'm trying to paint. We'll see how this turns out. Thank goodness I can go back to it alter since it's digital.

NYFW:M 3

This is gonna be a lot of work, I can tell you now. Not this sketch specifically, but the whole layout I have planned. Ugh, it's daunting just thinking about it! So I'm just doing a bit at a time until I start to feel like ti cohere's enough for me to want to start finishing stuff...

NYFW:M 2

A quick sketch as I plan my range of sketches for this series.

Washed

Been cleaning today, cleaning out my fridge, and doing laundry. So I'm a bit tired tonight and am just going to play with wash brushes in Photoshop...

Olivine

I was drawing a caricature of a young black man, but decided to use olivine as a color instead of the usual browns.

NYFW:M

Officially the first New York Fashion Week: Men, it was NY Men's Day that started it off, with some of the smaller designers showing at Industria as usual. But I thought more of them had a better showing this time.

Home again, the tired man

I don't know how my friend Rainer does it, having been working on his house for nearly teh past year. I spent 3 days helping him and I'm exhausted!

Tired In Hudson

Another day spent working in my friend Rainer's house with basically no internet access. So another hold post until I can draw properly! But the house is a diamond in not-so-rough anymore, so we're working hard to make it into something that will bloom into fabulousness real soon.

Hudson Holding Pattern

I'm up in Hudson to help a friend with his house Reno so this is a placeholder for now.

edit: and the placeholder has had a really ugly whale placed on it.

Scratchy 70s Inks

Pinterest turned me on to some vintage fashion illustrations that struck a chord with my already burgeoning interest in a fine but uneven ink line for fashion illustration. And since Kyle Webster has so many fab new ink brushes, I thought Id take a stab at it. The woman's face is part Cara Delevigne, part Eva Green, part Susan Dey. Oh, and she's wearing Celine. I saw it in the window yesterday and i just LOVED that stiff godet/flange element.

Redemption Sketch

Not with my model Kevin from last Friday but with another model Dan. This took a while as well, but Dan was a trouper and posed really steadily for about 40 minutes. He's an artist as well as a Virgo, so he held back on his commentary, I think. But I'm happy with it. it's a good likeness even if it may not be a fantastic drawing. IN fact, the other drawing I didn't think looked like my friend is a better sketch, just not a good likeness.

Fishing For Fashion 4

NY Menswear fashion week is nearly upon us, so I figure I'd trot out my old fashion sketches from the past Fall shows. Here's to getting them done!

When Talent Fails You

I tried to do a portrait of my good friend Kevin, and I couldn't. We worked for over an hour and the final piece was just not good. Except for the eyes, it didn't look like him at all!  I'm gonna scan it tomorrow when I have better light.

Linda R.

My neighbor, a popular stylist who's got incredible personal style herself, and a 50k strong following on Instagram - allowed me into her home to paint her portrait.

Juuumpsuit

I had been working on this croquis, changing it around and shifting the heads, positions and attitude for several days (it started out as the sketch series 'Saunter' from the past several days). The body underneath formed really nicely and I'm a bit sad to cover it up in an article of clothing, but it's here to show off a juuuuumpsuit (as on actor said in a movie I can't recall).

Queer Man's Drawing Salon 7.15

I went in and drew some nudes again but I was so not feeling it. Took me a long time to warm up and I really think I need to do this more often but this venue might not be it. Every time I go, I just never feel it like I used to. I feel like drawing from my own models is so much better...
