Mistook

I saw a frame of a print in a photograph (see below) but the image I got in my head was totally different from what I saw. So it's always fun to try to commit that now-original thought to pixel.

Head On 4

It's such a struggle sometimes when you try and decide between going with what's happening on the canvas versus trying your hardest to get the original mental image on the page. This is more of the latter, but the other difficulty is the fact that the image on the page starts to affect how you see what's in your head and it becomes harder to keep the original concept in your head.

Nude Dude Doodle

I wanted to doodle while watching tv so I pulled an old drawing from my iPad and decided to suss it out a bit more. Here's the transition video.

He's not done yet (I can't figure out the anatomy on his forearm, so I might have to look at photo references) but he's looking like I want him to, a hot bodybuilder type.

Head On 3

I love the way her face developed and I'm playing and experimenting with the rest of the layout but I feel like the drawing because something else form what I originally tried to bring to life. That's not a bad thing but in this case, I think I want to try and bring it back to the original vision, which was a deep, jewel-toned take on a sorta dark, Philip-Lorca di Corcia-esque scene.

Head On 2

Well, fleshing out a face without copying a photo is fun. Instead of relying on one pic, I'm looking at general lighing and features on various models, and culling them together into my drawing, all the while editing them so that they still hem to the vision I have in my head. But as I get into the technique and the drawing evolves, it's hard not to let the drawing become what the marks make it. For example, right now it's not at all what I had in mind but I love the feeling of Outcast artist Paul Azaceta's work that I feel it resembles. And I need to balance turning it into an homage of that style versus creating what I still see in my head...

Head On

Still trying to get something together for Black History Month, but not finding any satisfaction. I had an idea of a woman looking head on, and in my mind she looked like model Lineisy Montero. But I'm trying to draw her without actually copying a photo. It's funny because looking at videos of her, her facial shape and expression is exactly what I pictured in my had. Now if only I can translate that and not get lost in the drawing as it evolves, and try o keep it to my vision in my head... if it persists enough. Anyhow, this is the start.

Purple Man On The L Train

I was drawing most of this morning but wanted to head out to Williamsburg and inspect a store that had a jacket I was interested in last year, as maybe it was on some massive sale by now. Except the problem with taking the L train on the weekends is they're still repairing them after the damage from back during Sandy (!), so the train are about 20minutes between arrivals. So I doodled o pass the time. He wasn't anyone on the train, just a random face doodle.

Tit Out 2

Gah, I realize now that even the one tit pose is actually from a memory of an old Downton. Ugh, I didn't intend to copy I swear! I'm refining her face a bit and trying to find new colors to work with this. Maybe it can have a more 80s vice, I dunno...

Commercials Croquis

I was watching a recorded ep of this week's Project Runway and decided, I should try and doodle durimg the commercials, and do an old school fashion illustration again mostly because none of the designers on the show could really sketch. Except I didn't decide what she should wear so I kinda stopped there.

Tit Out

Still trying to do something for Black History Month, I thought maybe to do a fashion sketch inspired by model Adut Akech, who is Sudanese by way of Australia. There's still a strong silhouette thing I'm trying to get here, but also adding a bit of detail to her face. I kept the blue tone but question how effective it is in this composition—it's reminding me of those blue Asian lady paintings form the 50s/60s. I realized as I was drawing it how inspired it is by David Downton's work—the pose with the craning of the neck, the color blocking he uses in his Warhol-inspired color block pieces. I didn't think of it until I started drawing it, so I should mention it... and hopefully find a way to get it to be more original.

Black Mask, Sans Mask

I really wanted to explore the silhouette more but also try and give it a bit of depth within the very deep blue and black tons. I love this about certain African skintones, but it's hard for me to express in pixels.

Blackmask

I was walking home form a doctor's appointment and got an image in my head as I was walking through Madison Square Park. Like yesterday's drawingitt was inspired by Matisse' cutouts as well as an illustrator I follow on Dribbble. But in trying to do yet another silhouetted image of an African man (specifically because I wanted really African features), I wasn't sure if it might come across as racist. So I kept him blue like yesterday's, which is also kind of in keeping with Matisse cutouts. Frankly, he also looks like he could be a sage Filipino or other Asian man wearing a mask, the kind you might encouner ona  dusty road in the provinces in some kung fu movie.

Blue Black Man

I've been inspired to do a piece for Black History month, and I was also thinking of Matisse cutouts. I just wanted an almost naive silhouette of a n African man in a deep gloxinia blue. I don't think the pose is there but these are my studies in trying to arrive at a composition.

Kneed

Maybe yesterday's and today's sketch are part of a pantless dance series. I was tempted to put in a penis but think that it's fine without lol Now I just need to get me a dancer to pose like this so I can check my anatomy and form.

Rust Socks

Got an idea in my head for another sketch, but the drawing isn't quite what I had in mind so I have to retool this. The socks stay, though (well, for now).

Rust Washed 2

Love the technique, not so much the figure I drew, only because his stance is so ridig for such a loose technique.

Rust Washed

This is a makeup sketch since I delayed working on them to do, well, design work (as well as binge watch shit). I wanted to just lay down a wash and see what develops. I ended up with this stiffly standing guy, but for a technique I don't normally do, I'm fairly pleased.

Fleecey 6

I did some slight adjustment to the eyes on this piece, in prep for posting it on Instagram. I really do like how his eyes turned out. Wondering if I should try drawing him without the high neckline and see what the face looks like underneath?

Tilt & Pose 7

Well, I tried a 'stache and long hair, and it looks terrible!

Tilt and Pose 6

Not sure about this young, smiling face. I thought it would be something different to do, but it's not my thing. Maybe if I change something else to make him more edgy, like give him a crop or something, but not even the clothing is helping me like this more.

Taylor at Kung's

I was pretty hopeful about Taylor when I saw his preview pics He had an edgy, alternagay kinda vibe, and in person it was exactly that, with his mane of long hair. But he was also kinda into the more erotic performance part of it and didn't really pose well for my liking. So I'm a bit disappointed with my drawings even if I think he was beautiful.

Tilt & Pose 5

Experimenting more with that damn face, although this one isn't better than the last but still, it was worth a try opening his mouth.

Fleecey 5

I changed things up once again, this time fixing his hair and stare, and softening some of the fleece edges. I thin it's better but the others were all nice in their way too. Ugh, so indecisive!

Jose Redux

My friend and super-ripped model Jose is visiting again from Spain, and I got to sit on his bed and sketch him for a luxurious amount of time. Here's one of the two I created.

Tilt & Pose 4

That damn facial angle is getting the better of me and I cant stop trying to fix it. Although I thin this face is better, as I like the different nose I drew, not my usual aquiline shnozz.

Tilt & Pose 3

I wasn't happy with the guy's face, so I went for a Timothy Chalamet type guy with poufy hair.

Subway Guys: Cap And Scarf

This kid was staring at his phone and I liked his facial structure—not that you can tell from this rough sketch.

Subway Guys: Moustache

The retro hipster 'stache look is everywhere, but it's always nice to draw a good iteration of the trend, with younger guys don't want to look like West Village 80s clones. This was sketched on my iPhone on Procreate and a very fat forefinger.

Tilt & Pose 2

Had to fix that head and body, but still not sure if I like this. He's looking a bit nerdy 80s.
