FreeEeeeeeEE! With Fruit Snake. And Pignarat.

FreeEeeeeeEE! With Fruit Snake

FreeEeeeeeEE!

I had the most amazing acupuncture session - almost 5 hours of lying in a table with needles stuck into me apparently almost an inch deep! But it's amazing how my mood seems to be so much better. I'm not sure what the 7 Dragons treatment is supposed to really do, but I feel free as a bird. WheeEeeeEee!

Dark City, 2

Okay, I guess I shoulda finished it when I started it. That vest was all I did in this one on Monday and I can't say it's worth continuing any further. For the real, more fabulous outfits, watch the film!

Dark City

One of my favorite movies, Dark City, was recently released in an anniversary DVD, and while I haven't seen what changes they made to it, I was watching the documentary/commentary on the making of the film. I loved the look of this movie, so while they were talking about the costumes, I decided to try a drawing of one of the alien characters who look like s&m nosferatus. Well, with my own riff on the costume since I didn't feel like referring to photos.

Chalky Croquis

I started out doing a croquis but didn't know what to make it wear. In the end I latched on to an outfit I vaguely remember from a woman on the street, but the fact that she was a quirky, petite Asian woman seemed to make the outfit much more interesting than it turned out on this poor wannabee model I have here. I guess I was trying to draw like I see many fashion illustrators draw - all gesture and less refinement. It's a good thing to see if I can do, but ultimately it doesn't appeal to me, nor does it look very much like a style I want to pursue.

But I kinda like the roughness of the technique - I like how free the chalk tool makes me feel. Now I'll have to decide on drawing something actually worth saving - this one looks TACKY, haha!

900

Wow, I didn't plan anything special, just picked up my recent sketch of Bobby and decided to play with it a little. Who knew this would be my 900th drawing for this blog? Nearly 3 years I've been doing it, with only a handful of missed drawings (and all made up for, of course). I'd pat myself on the back if my neck weren't so stiff... heh.

Running on empty

My neck is causing me all sorts of havok, and the rest of my mood has gone sour so all I'm gonna settle for this rough doodle tonight.

Facebook Cake

I was too cheap to purchase one of those graphic cakes from Facebook so I just drew one for my friend's birthday today. :))

Moodbored

I was working on a mood board for a client yesterday and this was the only drawing I did all day. Cop out yes, but... I had no time. :(

Bobby, Interpreted

I did a sketch a couple of months back of a new friend, Bobby (who is also a professional runway model) and I went to revisit his photos. There was something so easy about his features that after I made my selections and shut down the pic files, I was channeling his profile in a totally extemporaneous drawing without referring to the pics at all. In some ways he's very much the aesthetic I grew up drawing, based off of Antonio Lopez profiles I grew up admiring.

When you start of drawing, sometimes you have an idea in your head about where you want to go. This was totally spur of the moment, and I liked how the lines formed so much that I didn't feel like they needed further fleshing out.

Zenaida! In Chalk!

If there's any character that lends itself to being drawn in chalk, it's my round Venus of the Rice, especially since the first ever drawing I did of her was in a sketchy, Henry Sorel-style pen sketch way back in the late 80s, early 90s.

Soft

Again with the chalk. This one turned out so pastel, it reminds me of soft 80s fashion, with nordic-featured models in music videos (don't ask me why - I can just see it in my head).

Crayons

I tried using a different tool tonight - the crayon tool from Painter's tool box. Not sure what to make of it, but it's fun to experiment.

Lanky

I woke up this morning realizing I hadn't done any drawing for yesterday. Damn that tequila!

As I was going through my blogs (I have a host of them to read through every morning) I saw Burberry Prorsum's pre-Fall line previewed, and was struck how the stances were so fashion illustration-y. So I did one of them. Never mind the fact that Christopher Bailey is trying to bring back bell bottoms (ugh, again?!?!).

There's something about the choice of medium that allowed for freer-flowing lines. I couldn't do this with a pen - chalk (digital or otherwise) seemed the most appropos.

Face Paint

I guess I did do a bit of drawing yesterday - I went back in and shaded HiFi's face and clothing a bit - not too much, lest I end up having to retool the entire piece. Not the most work done, but I did actually work yesterday before I put up that drawing I made today. Ha, guess I'm not remiss as I thought (yes, I'm stretching it a bit).

Noxious

I was so busy updating image files on a website last night I completely forgot todo a drawing, so this is today's make-up sketch. I should do another for today later on tonight. This was a shot of me when I first got my work laptop and was using it to watch DVDs in bed.

More Flow

Watching an old episode of Buffy, and drawing more drapery on this old drawing. Always good to be distracted while I sketch.

Wet Edged Brush

Just a little play with the coloring - I'm too buzzed from tequila drinks to really get into it, heh...

Showing Lines

Aging is such a surprise sometimes. It creeps up on you then you realizes, whoduhwhatdahey? When you find lines that weren't there seemingly yesterday, or things that make you realize you're not springing back as quickly as you used to. Of course, maybe it was the three tequila drinks I had last night that make me look and feel I looked bleh. I pulled up a new file and sketched away with the chalk, trying to keep in all the lines I was seeing (while not necessarily sketching a portrait) and I kept editing things out. Ah, aging.

Alton

I drew my coworker Alton for a possible storyboard we're doing, and it was just too easy. Because he's such a character, he already looks like a caricature. I did it in the proto 50s/60s style I've been doing since '97, when illustration first came back on the scene via the most stylish magazine of its day, *wallpaper. I left the drawing on my computer at work, but I'll upload it here as soon as I email it to myself.

Chalkpig

It's funny how the drawing looks more done to me by rendering it in another 'medium,' even if it's rather sketchy. Or is that because it's so sketchy?

Neck

My neck is still hurting, but not so much as before. Can it be that the stress that I felt was the cause is leaving, and therefore alleviating the pain? I hope so.

Fluidity

I'm on a fabric kick. I just wanted to play with drapery a bit in a quickie sketch.

Independence

On Saturday night, I was lying in bed reading comics, and wondering whether or not I should go out. But I was so comfortable being home... and on my 17th Anniversary of living in my apartment (I moved in July 4th in '92) it felt right to just celebrate by being home, alone. It was that way when I first moved in, and I was surrounded by my stuff as I heard the fireworks go off in the distance, and I decided, no, I want to be here amidst the unsettled clutter, living in my very own space for the very first time in my life. How perfect, since it was my own private independence day.

Seraphim, Pt. 3

I've always had a penchant for drapery. I can pinpoint my particular influences: the flowiness of Aphonse Mucha, The realism of George Stavrinos, and the movement of Dave Cockrum and John Byrne (particularly in the the way they drew Storm's cape). It's a varied set of models that combine to make my own rendition of it both an amalgam of the best parts of what I admired of these artists' works, and hopefully, original.

Seraphim, Pt. 2

Just played with the linework and draping a little more on this sketch. What I really need is to be talking with someone on the phone while I do it, so it becomes autonomic. I find my best drawings come when I don't think too much about them.

Seraphim

I got this image in my head, something I thing I've seen before, but brought to mind by a different image that I saw in a amagazine. In any case, I like the linework in this one, and I just want it to be about mindless, unconsidered, automtic drawing. So far, it is.

Gunner, Again

Just decided to play with the face in close up. Still can't spend too much time on the Mac finessing anything.

Gunner

I spent a lot of time while convalescing, watching anime online, which was kind of a chore trying to find the best position for my still problematic neck. I was inspired by the 'wizards' of Night Wizard, a 13 ep storyline, but this sketch isn't based on any particular character.

Platypeeg

Part platypus, part pig, part bee. Can you tell I was somewhat delirious? This was Monday, I think.

Magenta

On Saturday I tried to go to the gym and just ... move a bit. Not much, just some ab and stretches, just to get out of the apartment. I certainly felt better then. But by Sunday I wasn't feeling as great, but still good enough to get on the computer for a few minutes. I've decided that my posture on the computer was aggravating my neck, so I've been moving things around on my desk trying to find an optimal position for everything. I was able to spent a few minutes drawing this, inspired by the hairstyle of hot new model, Iris Stubegger, who I found out about by an issue of Vogue someone left at the gym.

Fat Fairy

By Saturday I was needing some cheering up in my bedridden state, so who better than my own Venus of the Rice, Zenaida?

Propped Up In Bed

Speaking of sick in bed, I took out my sketchpad and just did this quick doodle, looking at myself in the mirror in front of me.

Last Thursday

Here are the sketches I did while I was in the thick of my sinus infection. Nothing much, just whatever my pen would do while propped up in bed...
