PS1 Book Fair 4

The finished composition. I did most of the additions last night, but added a few details to flesh out the backgrounds today. I think it's cute.

Come Hither 3

I have about 4 new versions of this guy, as I couldn't decide which direction to take him. He's definitely a throwback in terms of looks—older, 80s man with a smoldering gaze (perhaps the origin of Blue Steel). I had several more finished versions but in the end, I think I lost a lot of the conte crayon appeal of the more immediate initial ones. So this is the one I post. He looks like a porn star, yes.

PS1 Book Fair 4

It's been a few days now so I'm including my impressions of the people (from my memory) as well as drawings of actual visitors (from my photos), his is the latter PLUS the former.

Polar Construction

I got the freelance gig again to do that holiday card I posted a few days back. But I had an idea how to construct it as a free-standing 3D piece and sen a skech over to my clients to get their okay before I proceeded.

PS1 Book Fair 3

I'm just going to keep on adding doodles to this collection until it feels like how I felt being surrounded by so much hipsteryness. Image to come

PS1 Book Fair 2

I'm continuing my sketches of people from yesterday's book fair. Not only was it inspiring because of the naive styles fro all the indie work on display, but from the people at the fair itself, both he vendors AND the visitors.

PS 1 Book Fair: Artsy Hipster

Went to the NY Art Book Fair at PS1 for the first time, and it as mobbed with hipsters and unwashed artsy types. I thought I'd try and sketch a few of them. Here's one typical look that I saw.

Grayscale Wash

I was inspired by some illustration I saw on Tumblr but the paint brush totally helped determine teh look of this drawing.

Men Again

This Comics Brush is making me draw comics-y men. This one wasn't as serendipitously fine as the one form two days ago, but he's handsome. Body needs work though.

Prada SS18

I don't draw women's fashions much anymore, but I loved Prada's new SS18 show. It was very Comme in my mind. I drew a fave look.

Officer's Coat

I got a new set of Fall clothing from a personal order I put in with a designer I know, and there was a coat that I loved from the start. But when my friend Ernesto came by to visit, I thought he'd look cute in it in a homoerotic shot. I got him to pose a bit in it, but I also decided to sketch it out, as it my wont. Plus the face turned out cute on this guy—he's a little Matt Bomer-ish.

Polar

I did an illustration proposal for a client's holiday card. I liked it so much UI decided that even if I give it to them to use, I would retain the copyrights (unlike some of the stuff I gave them previously). Oh, and this is also my 3700th post—woohoo!

Rounded 60

I started imagining a gal in some city like Portland, with her cuppa Starbucks wondering if she should head someplace. That's as far as I got on the narrative.

Mature

I went to the Gay Art NYC drawing salon late today, as I was basically lollygagging at home still in post birthday mode. The model was handsome in an Anthony Hopkins way, and he was definitely  someone who had been in great shape when he was younger but had aged (as we all will). I was kind of only half interested in drawing him (getting in late didn't help) but as I drew him, it became less about trying to bring out his features and more about just drawing what was there. I had fun with the 10 minute poses but when they said we would have a 20 minute break, I decided I would just go for lunch.

Emulation Mode

I've done illustrations like this before but some illustrator in The New York Times Book Review section last week did these contrasting noses, which I really liked. So this is me in emulation mode (i.e. blatant ripoff).

Druuuunk

Had a party this evening and had 4 drinks and no dinner. so by the tie I got to a restaurant I had to throw up in the bathroom. But it's all good. But this is me, drawing what I feel like.

I Gather

This was an idea I had for a shirt detail, that popped into my head in the last month or so and I always planned on making it a drawing. But seeing Gabriela Hearst's collection using details like this (albeit in different ways)(and quite wonderfully, I might add) reminded me to do a rendering.

Very Perry 35

Well, it looks better in my eyes, but I better publish this finally before I get the urge to tinker any further!!

Very Perry 34

And I thought I was done. Well, not so much. I took one look at my rendering of Isaac Churchill and though, that's all wrong. So here's me trying to get it right. Operative word: trying.

Lounger

My friend Ernesto posed for a few pics and one of them of him lounging on my couch urned out really well.

Pinkboy

Yesterday's drawing got an accidental ink color change and a similar but different name, after a subtle retooling!

Inkboy

I needed something easy to act as a palate cleanser for all the work I'd been doing on this Perry Ellis story. Voila: Inkboy!

Very Perry, Done

I just missed my window to post for yesterday the 7th, because I was busy posting to Instagram. I did a lot of work to finalize the Perry Ellis series, including some background sketches (quickies, like here, which really helped flesh out the story, albeit in a very minimalist way) as well as touch ups to faces and details. You can see the full story here.

Very Perry 33

I liked yesterday's rendering but I realized that the bleed placement on the seat of his pants made him look like he shit himself. Sooo-o-o, I had to retool it. This is the 3rd page of my story, just awaiting captions.

Very Perry 32

Adding more quick studies to flesh out the story...

Monday, September 4, 2017

Very Perry 31

I decided to flesh out the drawing with some watercolors... pun intended. I wanted to bring focus to the underwear, which is perfect since the dresser's pulling his pants down.

Down The Line

More than a bit tipsy and trying to post for the day, this line drawing of a man's torso is all Ican muster right now.

Saturday, September 2, 2017

Very Perry 30

My sketch was good enough yesterday, but I wanted to make sure it looked more like the model.

Very Perry 29

Adding even more quick sketches to flesh out the story. Model Will grabs a quick drink of water while dressers change him into his next exit.
