I worked through this quickly and posted it on Instagram tonight. I eventually made him a younger guy but still with gray hair and beard. I think it's an okay drawing overall, with his muscle dad bod. But not an ideal yet for sure...

I decided I wanted to do the classic Old Man as the year ending, Young Baby as the New Year coming drawing, but with a sexy Daddy type for teh exiting year. Even if I think 2025 kinda sucked in so many ways, it still had some positives for me. I've not drawn an older gentleman before where I have to determine my ideal for that look, so I'm spending an inordinate amount of time on how he looks...

I refined his face and he's reminding me a bit of 70s actor Parker Stevenson. It's funny, my process-it's a little bit like carving through my linework and feels like it's revealing a sketch that was there all along, I just need to find it.

I was posing in front of the mirror in the shower, and wondering if this could be a good pose for a new drawing. It's a bit like the Tug series I posted that ultimately got deleted by Instagram, but maybe if I make it less revealing it would still work.

I wasn't motivated to draw on Christmas eve, in fact I'm a bit overwhelmed since I'm still not fully out of my cold. So this is a quick sketch with no actual reference pics.

Life, Still

I'm embarking on a new series of still life drawings and paintings, hoping to get at least 60 done this year. This has been in the planning stages for a while, and I imagined how they would look but I don't really draw still life much so it was fun and challenging to see what I would come up with on the fly. This was also created as a gift for my friend, of the knife he gave me as a gift a few years back. He really put so much thought into it, which I appreciated. I have never wanted a knife, but this item is one of my fave things because Philip gave it to me with such intention. I intend to do still life work based on my favorite and most significant things in my apartment.

I always have Rene Gruau at the back of my head, and apparently it shows to viewers on Instgram. This is an ode to his Dior menswear drawings with naked men walking . I did thing with the Smooth Drag brush over the Ruffin brush, trying to see if there's a new technique to adopt here...

Now I'm trying the Slidr brush which has a unique effect by shifting between background and foreground colors the hard you bear down on your stylus.

I thought about doing a simple walking croquis, just because. But for some reason when I wanted to do a contemporary black model face, I couldn't muster one I found believable, so she's blank for now.

I'm quite happy with how this turned out—it's dark and edgy, but it shows nothing from a sexual POV, but it's all in the act and power of suggestion.

I've started to change the head shape more, as it wasn't quite Nicholas' head, and I could tell it didn't feel like him as such. Once upon a time I thought, oh, as long as you get teh facial features right it would work, but even ears make such a big difference, and the overall proportion of his head was originally just my default, but now it's closer to my reference photo.

I've gotten a good flow with this, it actually excites me to draw this, both by the fact that I am enjoying just copying the photo I took, but also because there's an energy I find in this concept.

I tried doing some head variants, but while I start out doing black women, I end up significantly drawing the wrong facial features (I'm doing all this from imagination) and they ended up at times looking Filipino, or in this case I believe, Latina. (And every uneve, but I'm so worn out by the facial wranglings I haven't the wherewithal to deal)

I'm finally starting this sketch from the reference photo I took nearly a year ago...! But I'm barely in the mood to draw, have been fighting a bad cold replete with debilitating headaches!

Studies for the kids

When I help out my students figure out their designs so they can transform them into flats, I often take a sheet of paper and draw it so they can see how such a garment can be rendered. I don'tfind it cheating because I show them a rough version they then have to renderd digitally, so the technique will still be theirs.

I had an idea for an Instagram post of a guy doing. a tug on his underawear. Typical, except I wanted his skin to stand out from a black background. So this is the study.

I had in mind to do a nude but with a super strong ink line, and I discovered Pencil 3 Varint and decided to experiment with i9t. It's not bad but I'm not sure where it's going.

I thought I'd do a sketch for Instagram and while searching for inspiration, I found an old brush I never really used extensively. Pencil Variant 4 has a hidden message in its strokes, but I was just wondering if it would work.

I usually give my students a straight up and down figure, but this time I thought I'd offer them  one with more zip in her stance, so I made one in contraposto.

Gingko Print

I had to create a pattern-making demo in Illustrator, and I always liked gingko leaves as a print, so I did a quick motif tracing off an actual leaf pic (from a royalty free photo) then I embellished a bit with the line work. I think it's cute! Ever since I started teaching I've been getting more and more used to Illustrator, and it IS just another method of digital illustration.

I discovered a new (to me) brush named Grinder, and it's kinda rough and I'm not sure I like it

I thought maybe we needed a background color to merge with his shirt/jacket, and emphasis the half-dressed-ness of him all.

I was just doing a doodle but the body is similar to Nicholas' body, with his annoyingly hot Adonis' Girdle and super flat pelvis. But I felt like the face—at least one I out in the hair—felt too contemporary? Like it's the hairstyle one expects on Instagram nowadays? To be fair, I HAVE been drawing this hairstyle for a while (or some variation of it) but I suppose culture has caught up and I need something fresher...

I added a second figure. I'm trying to draw more American black features, versus the African ones I've been trying to emulate from the runway models.

I suddenly got the idea to do a very stylized, outline-free sketch of very long skinny, twinky, Hedi Slimane-type models. But I'm not loving this face, but that's okay, I'm just mapping out poses and feelings.

I got him ready for Instagram, finally. I went through all my references and never found exact reference, but I did have similar views that I was able to glean the right anatomy (or so I hope) for his arms, hands and belly.

Popped Up Collar

A student of mine designed something he didn't even know how to figure out—as many of them have done. I find it's been part of my job to design the designs my kids make so they can make flats out of tehm. I remember being like that, except I always tried to figure things out, because I'm wired that way. Which is maybe why it's ideal I try to figure it out for them too. This was a vampire collar, as I called it.

I added another guy possibly in designer waders to overlay the background. Not sure what to do at this point, but doodling is always good for exploring solutions.

Hoodiehead

I usually do a half clothed figure, usually a naked man opening a coat or a shirt, but I wanted to try one with a hoodie, and I thought, maybe he's only got the hood attached to him. Et voila. A quick rough to get me started, plus I'm testing a new brush, the Palette Knife Gritty.

I really like this simple sketch but i do need to figure out exactly how his abs and arms anatomy look in this view. I'm wining it as usual.

I went in a completely different direction with the black guy, but I'm not sure which I want to keep! I find I like the drawing here more, but the previous version might be more attractive? I don't know.

Crouching With an Extra Long Belt

I was reading some fashion magazines at school today (we have an excellent fashion magazine collection, as one would expect of FIT) and I saw a shoot with a guy wearing an extra long studded leather belt. Clothed, of course, so I did a naked version in a different pose, maybe for Nicholas to pose in. Not sure the pose works, but I had to draw it to find out.
