Gareth, possibly done

Even if I technically already uploaded today's drawing (the fruit flies) I got a bit inspired tonight and just kept at Gareth's drawing, adjusting the style to match my older portraits from this series, from 2003. My style's developed quite a bit since I did those, and they seem more rudimentary to me now. Oh well, here's hoping they work together...

Fruit Flies

I think this one is basically self explanatory.

Standard-ized

I went to the Standard Grill last night to have dinner with my other friend Erwin and it was a blast just hanging out and talking for over two hours, over a couple of drinks. I must not be used to my liquor anymore as two cocktails got me pretty blasted and this was all I could manage even hours later...

Out Fit

Since it was men's fashion week in Paris, I was a bit inspired by the looks I was looking to wear next Spring by trying some of them out now with the clothing I already own. As much as I can't stand what Kris van Asche started out with for Dior, I really am responding to both his eponymous collection as well as to Dior Homme for next Spring (although I'm still on the fence about whether or not I would buy any of it). This was my outfit for Gay Pride, which was yesterday. As non-colorful as you can get, haha!

Mary and her friend Heron

Mary and her friend Heron both pretended they didn't see the NSFW photo that unexpectedly popped up.

Hard to Heron

As easy as it is to draw my own character, sometimes I can't get into drawing him right. There's something particularly specific about how Heron should look, and it can be a few pixels of linework in the shape of the eyes that make all the difference. I had repeated the eyes about a dozen times before giving up on this version, figuring I needed to get back to it another day... Also, don't mind the rudimentary body. I was trying to fit Heron into what should actually be a space too camped for him to be.

Brian, 3

It's funny how far off I am with my facial proportions. I keep retooling the mouth thinking I've opened it up far enough, but after rotating and lining up straight edges, I found I was way, WAY off. It's disconcerting, and encouraging at the same time, to be able to make the corrections. Of course, I'm seemingly farther away than I thought...

Hank and his friend Heron

Hank and his friend Heron sat in the train car a full 10 minutes before they realized it wasn't ever going to move.

J is for Joanne

As requested, although I think it's less interestingly rendered than the G. Maybe because it's just kinda upright.

G is for George

I bought the latest issue of a British magazine on graphic design, and the focus was on hand-drawn type. One guy did something that to me, looked very doable, so this is my quick Photoshop G made of swirled fabric.

Brian, 2

I decided to use Brian's portrait as a guinea pig for finding the right brushes to do a pencil style sketch digitally. I think I'm getting there but this isn't 100% right yet - as you can see, there are a few too many brushes and it looks like I've mixed some inks in there as well. Maybe I might have to do this in natural media instead.... gasp!

I've never drawn Brian before, so it's not looking like the best likeness. Of course, drawing from a photo doesn't help, because I'll tend to try and make it resemble the photo as much as possible, as opposed to when I draw someone live and in 20 minutes, I can get a likeness because I'm not being as anal about the line relationships... but I do like the drawing quality. It reminds me of my older work back when I was in college... pencil with watercolor overlays.

Next CS Portrait, 2

Been working on it a bit more, the details are...well, literally sketchy. But it's definitely forming!

Buurd

I got home late Friday night after going out to a movie with my friend Greg, and afterwards we went out to get a drink because the movie was kinda enhh (Sex and the City 2). I really didn't have the energy to draw, so all you get is this bird sketch thingie.

Next CS Portrait

My series of CS portraits was supposed to be finished in preparation for publication somewhere, but I didn't anticipate them wanting them at the Berlin-based company I approached last May so I'm scrambling to get into the groove and finish them up. I'll be lucky if I get three more done, but hopefully I'll be inspired at some point. Here's the next one.

Alfredo, Evelyn and their friend Heron

Alfredo, Evelyn and their friend Heron get all warm and fuzzy in the city of love.

Mermaid, Too

There seems to be something wrong with my tablet tonight and I can't seem to control the pressure of my lines. Gonna have to leave this at this for tonight.

Mermaid

I saw a clip art drawing of a mermaid in one of my font books so I thought to myself, we could use a mermaid too for our clip art selection.

Brian

I befriended a guy on Facebook because he wanted me to do a Heron pic for him. I think he has a nice face, with really prominent bone structure, so I asked if he would pose for some pics so I could do a sketch. This is the start of it. I can't just keep doing Gareth day in and day out...

Gareth 3.5

Are you bored yet with Gareth? Sometimes the worst thing to have is a digital file thatyouc an constantly tinker with. Latest update? Lilac backgrounds and touches.

Kiddie Critters

I've been redoing our laser printing book at work, updating the choices of designs, fonts and clip art. So much of the clip art on hand was just heinously old so instead of trying to buy any new ones, I decided just to draw a few. Hell, why not... plus, drawing at work? Easy afternoon. I left the files at work so I'll upload them here once I get back to work on Monday.
Well, here they are. Not much in the way of quality, but better than some of the clip art we were using. I'm just too lazy to really clean them up. Well hey, they're for free, right? As is!!

Crude 3

When I have an idea in my head, usually the lines reflect what I want - a figure so long and lanky she looks like she's pouring down her pose. I'll lay it out then have to adjust the anatomy so that it at least reflects a style (fashion, comics or otherwise) that I can relate the drawing to...

Crude 2

In keeping with the title, this is all about heavy inks and less refined strokes... at least, to start with.

Crude

This is a sketch idea that popped into my head after coming back from an aborted attempt at working out. Not finished, just a crude sketch in more ways than one, but hopefully I'll see it realized very soon...

Destinée and her friend Heron

Destinée and her friend Heron only wanted the Cattleyas stuck all the way in the back.

Gareth 3.4

I adjusted the background to what I think the color should be (as opposed to what I see in the reference pic) and also adjusted the crop more. I think it's finally coming together and I can start to see the final direction.

Cassius 2

Thought I'd flesh out and finish Cass's sketch. I don't have a handle on the watercolor tools, but I do like the effects I've played with here. Might bear exploring in the future.

Cassius

A friend from California was visiting town this weekend, and we met up for drinks at a very straight, very classic sports bar in the West Village. Cass and I met up online via a fashion website for more avant garde menswear, so after the gym I threw on a pair of drop-crotch shorts and a distressed scoop-neck tee and sockless, laceless Margiela shoes and went out to meet him for a drink, fashion forward but nothing too dressed up. I met Cass right outside the bar, and there he was, over 6 feet tall in a sheer Rick Owens shirt, drop-crotch grey pants and a hat worn just so. Needless to say we were completely out of place.

Bri Face

After taking some test shots of my model, I think I may just try and do a portrait of him instead. He's got such cheekbones that that's what I want to highlight (literally and figuratively). Thinking about that, I just played with the pose sketch I did yesterday...

Bri Pose

I've got a new model coming in tomorrow and I had a set idea of the pose I want him to get into. It's not much so far as positioning so much as attitude. Although this drawing really doesn't show that...

Searching for a Line

I seem to have lost my ability to have a sense of what's in women's fashion after all these years, and I know why: I don't really care. I used to love women's fashion, but something about it has died inside me. It was a struggle to even come up with anything remotely fashionable to sketch... I have a sense, but not any solid instincts anymore. But ironically I still want to draw it, but don't know how to get back into it. This was a stab at trying to make something I'd be interested in, and find my line and form in fashion illustration. I feel like it's mimicing what I think it should be, but isn't really honestly there. Odd.
