Josh's Tatts

I saw a hot chef at my gym with really cool tattoos, not so much unusual as they were well done. I asked him who drew them for him so he gave me her Instagram account, and he intoduced himself as Josh. Inspired by him, I thought of a pose that might feature his tatts.

I got it in my head to do a sort of classic Vogue studio-editorial-style pose, where a full-body image of a model in some unusual, active pose is the focus. hard to do from your head. so the body language needs to be nuanced. You can see the initial sketches in the red and blue lines.

Weller's The Best Thing 3

I've refined the face to the point that I like it better as a facial construction, but I fear I've lost the original expression I had liked so much when I first drew him in. Also adjusted the shirt details...

A.Presse-Ish

There's a lot of down time in retail, and between customers I tend to either draw or scour the net. I discovered the Japanese brand A. Presse (I wonder if it's a play on J.Press?) and was impressed with one silhouette they had on their Instagram feed. But I got distracted before I could make the drawing more substantial.

DAFt-y

The model David Alexander Finn has a great face that belies his very tattooed body,  He posted a pic of him  shirtless and with a cigrette hanging from his mouth, and I thought I'd take it one further since I'd been planning on doing a fully tatted nude and this seemed like the right inspo for it.

Hudson Shapes & Colors

While walking to work today, I passed by a lot of show windows that had interesting furniture in various colors and shapes, and I thought of a naive series of drawings where it was only about the shapes and colors. I tried my hand at it once I got to the store, painting a vignette from the corner of the store near the entrance. I couldn't leave well enough alone, though, and added a lot of textures. Need to find the more minimalist balance.

Brekker

I was watching Netflix's Shadow and Bone show on my iPad on the way up to Hudson, and I drew the profile of the character Brekker. Not sure who the actor is but he certainly has an interesting face.

A Facebook friend shared a link featuring Paul Weller with Boy George guest singing on "You're The Best Thing" which led to YouTube suggesting a clip fron the same song being performed at Live Aid back when...and Paul Weller had the best short haircut (although he always has the best haircuts). So I drew a quick sketch before bed (in the wee hours) of that hair.

I fiddled with the details and am now happy with the 'final' product of this study of Ernie jumping on his gym equipment.And now I can upload it to Instagram...

Profile, Looking Back

A doodle inspired by the guy doing shoulder shrugs at the gym today, and how his sloping shoulder line looked really long and lean.

Trainman 2

Sitting in the store can be dreadfully boring when it's super quiet, so I trotted out this sketch to try and do more of it, but I'm not really feeling it to be honest.

This was a sketch I made on the train yesterday, but I'm making it count for today. I was trying to play with Photoshop on my iPad, and honestly it's beeter for me than Procreate was, but I'm still not used to it. Also, some kid on his first train ride sat right next to me and wanted to find out more about my work. I think when he looked at my Insta he realized my feed was probably too gay for him, lol.

Hudson Wardrobe

I've been house-sitting and store-watching for my friend Greg, up in Hudson. Since he sells vintage designer clothing, I have upped my game beyond my previous casual weekend wear for Hudson, and tried to dress like how I normally do in NYC, to play up the designer wear tone. Since it's for 3 days a weekend, I usually plan my outfits well in advance. But as I do this over and over, I get lazier and now I'm plan usually the night before I leave. These three are this weekend's looks, which I dreamt up in the shower and sketched as soon as I toweled off.

The Look of Him

While working in my friend's store while he's away, a customer came in to shop, and he was so handsome I couldn't help but wonder why he was: so i tried to study his features. Two days later, I thought I'd try and draw him, and see if I could figure out what his features were that so enthralled me, since the memory of his attractivness didn't really translate into knowing what his features looked like. I just recall him being tall, dark and handsome.

I got my online friend Darrell to pose in the drawing's pose, so i can get some detail to render. Darrell has a nice meaty ass so it worked well with the hand clutching it. I couldn't decide on the backgrounds so I went with 3. These are two of them.

I was up in Hudson, and while waiting for customers at my friend's store (which I will be watching and tending to for 3 weekends in March, beginning with this one) I decided to draw a sketch I had an idea for, based off of a pic of my own but as a reference. No, I don't look just like this—I'm much skinnier so I shaped me up a bit. Hey, the power of drawing!

I love this pose, and also, I was never much of a butt guy but I feel like that tide is turning... that's what happens when you stare at one too long.

So I did a drawing called ump coat a few years back, and I stopped drawing it because O wanted to get a reference for the butt in the pose first. Well, I got Ernesto to pose for me, but after I took the pics, I realized I loved Ernie's actual pose as is. So I decided to revisit Jump Coat this week, but ended up drawing the reference pic as is instead. And with the emphasis on his butt, Jump Cakes seemed like a good title.

In a effort to make him younger and less old school, I gave him a haircut off of a guy from Zara, but by the time it got drawn it became a nicely ratty mess. And hooray, I think he feels younger now.

So the hunched over shoulders wasn't working for me, and then I decided he should have a shirt instead of a coat. But now my problem is, he looks like an older style model, one who is not young and fashionable but perhaps who would show up in an Banana Republic campaign, lol. Hot, but older.

So yesterday's drawing is evolving even more but wondering if this is working? He reminds me of an awkwardly naked Hugh Grant.

New Belge 2

I'm refining the rough sketch I did the other day and it's evolving. I tend to draw a more mature model, I think, which is something from my formative years looking at models in the 80s. I think that colors my POV forever, so my immediate ideal tends to look like those older male archetypes, and as such feels dated. So I'm trying to update the face (which I thought skewed 1950s to begin with) and go for a more minimalist layout. I added the whiskey glass last minute, that lush.

New Belge

Testing out the New Belge (short for Beglian inker) brush on Photohosp, with an image inspired by the old 90s Jazz perfume ad, where the images of the men there seem to have been very formative for me.

Subway Boys 4

I tweaked and tweaked yet again, and while it doesn't look like the guy I recall from  the subway, it IS a good exercise in rendering facial lighting.

I thought I might upload this drawing to my social media so I tweaked a lot of the details which would not seem obvious to anyone who glanced at the previous iteration, but never mind about that.
