That's the first name of the Legion character I'm trying to redesign, and this sketches are nowhere near anything I'd want. But it's always fun to play. She's the erstwhile girlfriend of the other Legionnaire I've been redesigning, Timber Wolf, so I thought it apt.

Those pose was an attempt to get a feeling/mood across in the pose, which I've imagined in a way that I haven't found a reference photo for. So it's a blank slate right now. Alt=so, there might be a blanket involved later.

This might be my favorite variant because it's a bit more Grell in the all-black, and it reminds me a bit of Grell's Grimbor for no other reason than the black.

I finally started designing my new Timber Wolf costumes in earnest. I really wanted to create a modern take on athletic wear like I see at teh gym, because men wear skintight compression gear at the gym so regularly now it really IS the future of the Legion. But I also wanted to do alot of bare skin, thinking along the lines of, what if Mike Grell redesigned Timber Wolf in 2019? (This reference is for hard core Legion fans btw) First attempt...

Chala-mane

I was doodling on my iPad and drawing what was turning out to be my usual man with floppy, Timothy Chalamet-kind-of-hair. But I thought to myself how my faces are usually quite lopsided when I try to do front-facing faces. And true enough, a quick horizontal flip turned up a weird lopsided visage. I reworked the drawing from that flipped version, and I think it turned out better.

Garrel-ous

I love Louis Garrel's tousled mane of floppy curls, and his oh-so-hip French sexiness. I tried to channel him in a drawing by looking at his photos but not copying an actual pose. I chose the pose and tried to render his features in the pose that I started, without actual references for him in the same pose. I think it feels like him. Blame my watching his latest film, A Faithful Man, just last Sunday (to get away from my oppressively hot apartment) for the current fixation.

Blue Braid

I went up to spend the night at my friend's apartment because my AC has been out and it was so hot the night before I could barely deal. On the train up there was a lovely Asian woman who had clearly tried blue haircolor in the past and had grown it out by at least 6-8", but she kept the ends blue and it looked really cute and delicate fragmenting from the black into the variegated blue tones, into a braid. So I drew her on my iphone Procreate app while riding up.

Pose Pose Repositioned

I finally broke down and put on a suit and got into the pose to see if my draping and anatomy were okay. That made me feel better about how to adjust the drawing, and to consider it done. Done! So done.

I had this pose in my head but I think watching the tv show Pose made it more queer than I had originally imagined. It's a stance I've done before but I think the shirt covered up the torso so much that it softened up the masculine form and made the hips look more feminine? I was walking home from an opening when I passed a family of what looked like tourists, and the tall blond son had a look that popped an image—this image—in my head immediately. Now, how to finish it off...?

I wanted to draw a man in a coat but I ended up thinking up some weird sexual robe scenario, possibly in a gay bathhouse! There's something about how delayed this tablet is now, it's making me draw in a much more naive way (this Bamboo stick brush doesn't help).

After hours of finding old Drivers and constantly testing and rebooting my iMac, I finally got my Wacom tablet to work again! Oh lord, this has been a trial. It's oddly unresponsive in a way, but at least it's working. Here's an ugly first sketch trial that I did to test it out.

Naked Guy

I had an old sketch I started in Procreate that I revisited because my Wacom tablet drivers were updated on my iMac and it turns out that the 10+ year old Intuous 3 I've been happily using is no longer supported. So it works perfectly fine, just not with my updated OS nor my updated drivers. Ugh, the built in obselecence... Anyhow, this guy was an exercise in drawing from an idea versus a photo reference. Hell, if I'm honest, that's pretty much most of my drawings. Anyhow this is a rough sketch, obvi.

I abandoned the Loomis method for this gal but I can totally see how my mistakes come in, as you can see by my constant corrections. I also have the issue of drawing women more many than I used to, or at least, more manly than I thought. Considering I've only drawn men for the past couple of decades, it's understandable.

I've alsodone her makeup in a very retro 70s/80s fashion illustration style. I've been seeing too many vintage drawings lately.

Another Loomis Head 2

I thought I'd fill in the drawing some more, but I'm still not used to my iPad as much as I am my desktop. I did see some friends do some amazing things with their iPads and now I'm a bit eager to catch up.

I find that I can draw faces but I spend a lot of time creating marks then correcting them as I go. I'm wondering if the Loomis method will help me put things down correctly from the get go?

I did this clean cut guy in the subway and he looks a lot like some public servant politician in my head. Not the best but hey, YOU try doodling with your fat fingers on your iPhone!

Color Study 6—Finney Suit

I've revisited this image with teh intent of finalizing it but I keep changing my mind about how to render his torso. his is the current state of it—it's reduced still but it seems a bit stiffer than the initial version which I've either gotten too used to, or the immediate energy is just better in the old one. Thank goodness you can retool things ad infinitum in Photoshop.

I need to finish up this guy—it was supposed to be a study of minimalism, so I'm trying to refine the few details that exist without over rendering. Naturally I keep going back and forth...

I retooled the proportions of the face and concentrated on the newly-lowered right eye and brow.

Nekkid Kid, Done

I had a couple of versions and once I started fleshing out the form more with yesterday's initial start, I realized I needed to pull back to an earlier version that had better movement and attitude. So this was the end result. I really wanted him to be boyish and have a lean but natural body type and look like he was in teh middle of looking at something interesting.

Well, I started out drawing him naked but then I decided I wanted him with underpants. I needed something to be folding and wrinkling to indicate his slightly bent over posture.

Continued redesigning teh costume of Legionnaire Timber Wolf. Not the same base drawing but one I actually enjoyed doing more, doodling on a pad with pencil, while I was watching the Portrait Artist of the Year series, which really inspires me.
