Front Bend

 

I had a brief idea to make another guy bending into my Back Twist guy from yesterday, and realized I don't actually do paired poses. Maybe now's the time to try. But in the meantime, I'm constructing them individually.

I realize I was doing what comic book artists do to women—contorting the pose so we can see both their tits and ass in one pose—and in a man's case, also include the silhouette of his penis—which really doesn't make sense anatomically! So I did subtle adjustments that are hopefully more correct.

I like the pose—it reminds me of my old poses from the late 80s/early 90s, where everything had an extreme tension and comic book dynamism, since that was my main resource for poses.

Just like my man with pearls image, I wanted the body language of this model to be craning his neck so much that he's pressing against his neck. I feel like I've drawn this pose before but never finished it, so perhaps, here we go again.

This was a quick one—I just wanted to drawfrom a photo, and this was an old shoot I did with Ernesto and I just pulled up a frame. I like how it turned out but that's also because I'm not necessarily thinking of doing 'a piece' and just drawing. It's purer that way, in some ways.

Minim

I was trying to draw something for Instagram but stopped at this very minimal rendering. I used to do a lot of these, but I think the audience for them has moved on. In any case, I posed it.

Doubletake

Hmm, I'm kind of intrigued by this two color line application here. I just switched up colors to do a different take on the original pose, just to see, and I like the superimposed look in a darker color. It's not vastly new since I've done mult-color line work before, but somehow this one is feeling fresh. Maybe it's because the line of his buttcheeks is still showing through and it feels more illicit? Not sure...

In Store: Skate Break

Still continuing my old In Store series, even if I basically screwed the pooch on it by not releasing it last Summer when I should have. So here's a kid in Summer gear that could go well with the other skaters in my series.

I'm not as successfully doing Antonio here, but that's okay. I think I should be doing me. I've been thinking a ot about a class I plan on proposing for FIT, which is basically teaching my techniques to the student body. I'm a bit conflicted because i developed these techniques for me, but part of me thinks it's good to share tehm, and another part of me wonders if I should share them because I may never get a chance to really use them to my benefit anymore...

I was thinking about this hairstyle I devised back in like, 1989-1990 (I still have the original painted on the letterhead of my mannequin company then, D.G.Williams) so I thought I'd draw him in a full outfit. I decided a bit of nudity was in order since I started by drawing the body, so I put him in a Japanese fundoshi. I'm channeling my inner Antonio for this one.

edit:"Gouache Bone Gritty Dry" is the brush I'm testing out as a pencil brush. Not sure it's the best one for these purposes, but that's what trials are for...

I had an image in my mind of a very inky looking 3/4 shot of  man, in an awkward position, but I couldn't get it out on to the canvas. instead I ended up with this guy.  Sometimes that's how it goes...

I got into editing the drawing especially since it's a technique I havent played with in a while, but as I doubled up my layers I realized it started getting a very digital, Procreate look to it. In the future will we look at the years 2020s and think of the artwork as overly rendered, or the beginnings of the overly rendered work?

I've been thinking that if I teach a digital illustration class based on my techniques, I better develop new techniques! Specifically ones for womenswear and women's fashion illustrations. My muscle memories of my old sketches from decades ago are carrying me through, but I really want to teach something teh kids can take with them as the best I could teach them.

Stealing A Crook

I kept staring at a man I saw in public, trying to remember how his forearm muscles behaved in teh crook of his elbow (hence the stealing a crook). I then remembered I had my iPhone adn should just do a quick sketch in Pocket Procreate.

I did a nude as well as a Y-front briefs version I actually like the Y front version more, there's something more fashion about it, but I know the cock will get more eyeballs immediately. So, peen it is!

And now he's very naked. I had to give him a body—that body hair was just asking for a body to go with it. Now I just need to clean up the placeholder pearls i sketched in and he should be good to publish on IG.

I defined the face more. He's not as square-faced as I had planned (I wanted a squatter, compact, more Tom of Finland aesthetic, but I can't fight my own personal preference so he's starting to look like my typical guys. Or one of them at least. I ain't complaining.

I had the idea of a very masculine, possible hairy man, wearing strand upon strand of pearls like some Karl Lagerfeld Chanel Couture runway look from the late 80s/early 90s. SO I had to create a really hot, masculine guy to contrast the jewelry. I thought this face would work.

Old Man & The Seat

I wanted to sketch a man seen from above, sitting on a chair or something, but as the sketch got more sketchy, he started looking much older than I had planned. Which didn't make me want to continue drawing! So I kinda stopped here.

Flats Concepting

My digital design class is in its home stretch and my students are trying to make flats for garments they have no idea how to construct. So part of my 4 hours with them was going from desktop to desktop, showing them how to make a flat for the garment they have in mind! This was the sheet I took from one person to the other.

Ugh, that sketch is so disturbing, I had to try and fix it, but ultimately I think it's best to start again. I need to figure out a way to sketch more like myself even if I'm chatting through a lesson.

I was showing a fellow teacher how to draw fashion illustration digitally and the sample sketch I was working on turned into a figure who looked strangely like 80s/90s model Gail Elliot. Also it's a terrible sketch but it got the point across to my coworker.

Ben Shaul Eyes, Done

I twisted the face a bit because it looked awry when I did a horizontal flip on the image, but I think while I lost some of the particular likeness I had in mind, its a better drawing for the face. Unless I change my mind later, haha. Then I tweaked his hands and arms a lot, as well as cleaned up the linework. Anyhow, it's done for now.

Sometimes a change in color makes all the difference. I wasn't feeling this drawing 100%, but when I turned the black into a bright blue and neutralized the background green, it feels like a piece coming together now. Now I just need to fix the anatomy on that arm on the right. Although now I think he looks more middle eastern than like Ben, but that's okay too.

I'd been drawing and developing the face, but I keep reverting because I start losing the expression I loved in the first place. Thank goodness for saved layers and versions I can return to!

The problem with editing a drawing and refining it to get it to a finished piece, is you often lose the immediacy of your line work. This is in full evidence as I seem to have redrawn Ben Shaul into Eric Etebari. Hmm, might have to rethink this edit.

I'm trying to explore the Tracker Ink Brush more and for some reason my sketch is looking a lot like how I remember Ben Shaul, my fave male model from the early 90s, even without me using aphot reference. Oddly enough, I saw a photoset of his old photos while drawing it, but Inever studied them to glean his features, it sorta just happened by osmosis. Funny, that.

Found a smooth new ink brush worth exploring today, even if it's been installed since Summer 2022. But I like both the handling as well as the imperfect marks of this Tracker Ink brush.

Hmm, I first thought the face I drew was kinda cool, but now I think he just looks like a version of Cowboy Bebop.

White Blouses

I've had the devil's own time trying to find a perfect blouse to draw for an illustration I have yet to finish (BECAUSE I can't find the perfect white blouse or dress for it), so I thought I'd try just designing one. I had originally drawn the piece with a white blouse that I had seen both in stores and on people, but now that I've delayed on publishing the drawing, I feel like the original gathered neckline I wanted to feature might be a bit passé. So I thought, shall I do it with crisp pleats? Like the design, but not sure it's the one I want for the drawing. Still not sure about the sleeves on these.
