Chin Up
Most people who've been following my work will know I often post this facial pose, which has been de rigueur for the past several years in fashion for women and more recently, men. Upshots are not the easiest thing to get right and I still don't feel I have the jawlines down, so anytime I see a good reference, I try to learn from it. Here's one from a shot of male mode Charlie Matthews.

Sneer 11
I'm determined to get this done this year so I'm underpainting the body instead of the ever-distracting facial work I have to do.

Phil, Turkey Slapped 2
As I mentioned, it's easier to refine something thats already been started, mostly because I'm so appalled by the initial mistakes made in the rough that I have to correct them for my own peace of mind. And keep at it until it works...

Fashion Flasher
I had an idea while flipping though magazines, and it involved a guy with edgy, fashion-y long hair and a trench coat. So this is the start of it. And hooray, 4100 posts!

Phil, Turkey Slapped
This is a long time coming, and I keep putting it off because of, well, life. But editing is easier than starting so this is suuuuuper rough, but now it's started. So now it's here. Yay!

Angelic 3
This guy didn't change too much but I did refine details on the figure, as well as on the Lying Cat rip-off. So this is kinda done for now, especially since I also posted it on Instagram.

Blocked
I keep returning to my idea of a blocked out colors with minimal details on the interior, a style I think I can adapt to the current trend in sold, blocked colors in illustration. If I only had the wherewithal at the end of the work day to do so!

Big Bad Wolf Brush 7
I'm having fun with this brush—the drawings take on a very cinematic, chiaroscuro feel in my opinion. So it inspires drawings that look like they came from something you might know... like, what happened in this scene? Is he in a bathroom? Why is his hair wet? And why is he so casually naked?

Blondie Bear
I was experimenting with more brushes and just sketching away, trying to draw a face I normally wouldn't, in a simpler mode. It ended up looking a bit like model Will Higginson, who I drew a couple of seasons back at Perry Ellis. Anyhow, this is just playtime, but who knows if I develop it further...

Pencil Experiments
My digital brush array is pretty large and it's hard to know how to use things without trying them out in various ways and resolutions. I often resort to the pencils I developed, but I always wonder if someone else's version would work better for me.

Shorts Over Leggings
I remember when I first wore shorts over jeans back in 2011, and I had ordered leggings from American Apparel but wanted to get a drop on the styling trick so I wored shorts over skinny jeans. I recall getting accolades from my friend and his people at his atelier...now the layering technique is everywhere—especially on straight guys at the gym!

Context
I was brainstorming with the wonderful women of Context + Co. for a project were working on together, and I was suggesting that illustrations could be very easy, as I whipped out a quick one in front of them on my iPad.

Serial Dad
Went to the Gay Art drawing session at The Center today to draw a fave mode, who goes by Serial dad on Instagram. Can't say I did very well—too be honest, I was distracted. But I did like my 2 minute starter drawings.

Return to the Runway, FW'16 revisited
I pulled up this old drawing from 2016 and wondered why I drew such a face, and so I set about transforming it. I wanted to do a ruddy faced guy just like some of my favorie online artists do, but instead of drawing a new face I thought I'd try and remake this old, unused one.

Stance
This sort of 'ready-to-fight-or-run' stance is such a typical comic book stance for me to draw. It feels like all my heroes in my comics got into these poses before a battle.

Queerly
I can't decide if I drew a femme man, a trans woman or a butch lesbian in a corset. I guess "Queer" it is!

Glazer's Edge Test
I'd used the Glazer's Edge brush for the painting on my friend's portrait, but I liked the texture of the brush in itself so was wondering if I could do an abstract with just that alone, after being inspired by giant brush stroke paintings both at Williams Sonoma's windows; and in a poster I saw on the subway. This needs work, though.

Big Bad Wolf Brush 4
I felt like the hipster I drew was too soft and felt like toughening it up a tad (but not so much that I didn'd give him peach pants). I like the drawing but don't love it enough to post on, say, Instagram. I wonder if it's because I often draw hyper masculine guys and this guy is too soft for me? Except that's the intention behind how I drew him...

Sneer 10
I've been wanting to paint again in an opaque style so I think this portrait/nude will be in that vein. Im painting in one layer so every stroke of color I out down has to relate to the rest of the colors before it. like real paint layering.

Bear Claw 10
Someone on IG wanted to buy a print of the face of this sketch, but as I looked into my files I realized I never finished him. I think adding this background treatment is kinda finishing him off, but you never know with me...

Comics Brushes
I discovered a few brushes that Kyle Webster designed with comic books in mind. The starburst effect is perfect for the super-powered effects in these comics...

Filipina
I was sketching what I thought would be a black woman's face, but I felt like she was looking more Filipina. But I wasn't sure how to style her so it sorta just became this kinda 80s-throwback facial structure. Maybe I'll revisit her again and see about finishing her further.

Aahhh, nudity
That's what it looks like the guy is saying as he stands, arms akimbo, sans clothing save for a pair of white bikini briefs.
This is another quickie experiment with a new brush, ironically called Old Brush Ink. I decided to use one of the many drawing references I save here in Instagram, too. I generally try to draw everything from my head if it’s in a more stylized form (like these ink sketches) but sometimes I’ll draw from references just to keep learning about anatomy. I’ll use the pics as a guide only and change features and details as I wish. Strangely, I’ll sometimes change things because they don’t look right in the sketch even if the anatomy is real and right there in front of me! This was based on a shot of Andrei Ziehe, but I changed pretty much everything by stylizing it all.
