The sketch from the other day has morphed a bit! Although I do like this face better than the shadowed version now. Just need to sort out his arm... the abs are easy-peasy lol

Model Drawing

First day of class! And my first model drawing demo. I'm trying to teach the kids to loosen up, but it's hard for newbie sketches to let go of their death grip on their pencils—I know I had a hard time myself! But baby steps, baby steps. These are my sketches from when I drew along while the girls (all girl class) sketched from my model, Logan.

Leaning Into Lamont

I sat in on two classes today, the first one being with another Model Drawing professor doing womenswear, and teh second I didn't realize was happening, which was my friend Lamont doing a menswear class for upperclassmen. I absconded the first one after an hour to join Lamont, and draw from his male model. Not what I need for my own class, but effective for seeing how he teaches.

Also, my gesture drawings are terrible.

edit: I left the drawings at school so I'll have to go in and photograph them and upload them here later.

So I pulled an old face sketch and reworked it into a pose similar to teh one I started yesterday, but as I refine it I'm finding it's not quite working. Also, I don't seem to want to shade his body the same way, which is odd. Goota figure this one out ...maybe later lol

I'm having my doubts about whether or not I want to post the one I've been working on, but maybe a 3/4 view man with his crotch just below the lower edge of the canvas? I dunno, I'm kind of rushing it here, as I haven't posted on IG in a week and I've been noticing followers leaving, which shouldn't be a big deal yet here we are...

Sitback

I decided to take a break from the shower pose guy, as I often need to walk away in order to come back with fresh eyes. So this one's a quickie doodle.

His body's been adjusted but I find it too vertiacl to post alone in Instagam, so I thought Id do a composition with a new version of his face. But this isn't really working for me...

It's a subtle change but I've been tweaking the anatomy of his arms. I drew everything from memory but now I am looking at myself in the mirror, then running back to my desk with a recent memory of how the art muscles should look!

As I refine his body, I'm starting to wonder how to censor him for Instagram, since they've been craking down on visible penises lately, even just on otherwise innocent artwork...hence the pants.

Walk Pose

I have a few standard go to poses (what illustrator doesn't?) and this is one of them recently. I'm trying to get the energy of a walking model but only from head to hip, and I always have trouble situating the arm in front of our view.

Shower Pose 5

The more I look at him the less I want his features to be exaggerated. Trying to adjust his center of gravit a bit as I think I went overboard on the S curve (which I emphasize via the color swooshes).

Fashion Stare, Bodied

I'm thinking ahead to the classes I'll have to teach (as well as the ones I wanna teach) and turned the recent "Fashion Stare" head sketch into a full croquis with an eye toward a class demo. Not perfect but I'm liking his energy.

Big Bow, Done

After 4 years, it's finally complete. Done is better than perfect, although I did make some adjust ments to the crotch area in case Instagram was being extra finicky after the last time I put a dick out on my feed.

FaceTime Demo

I did a share-your-screen on FaceTime for the first time. I didn't know it had that feature! Gah. Anyhow, my fellow teacher has never seen me draw live on the computer, so I showed him a sketch from start to finish.

Wow, I think this is almost done! Just have a few tweaks still, and I'm gonna let it sit for a day before I post it, because I'm sure I'll find little details worth updating...

Fashion Stare 3

Don't mind the weird outfit and colors—I was watching a YouTube video and the guy pulled out a mug with those colors on it, and I wanted to see if I could use the color scheme in an outfit.

That face is looking weathered, and more than a bit like Sebastien Suve to me (well, Sebastien's older brother maybe)

I put in a figure from the head, but then I started developing the face and now if I put it into teh croquis I'll have to shrink it down again. Well, maybe they become separate drawings instead...

There are poses that define the look of a certain fashion era, and I'm stuck on what was forever saddled with the "Blue Steel" moniker of the 80s, even if the current fashion poses advocate looking down your nose at people with half-mast, heavily lidded eyes. I mean I do that too, but in my mind, this look rules. Ah well, fashion is cyclical and everything returns again.

Runway Walkers

It's the menswear shows in Milan today and one photo showed a great back view of an exiting model, and using that exit I drew the croquis of his back, then decided to do the front as well, then show how clothing drapes on both.

High Waist

I've been shopping online for oversized lace shirts for my friend's birthday, and in the process got an image in my head of a large shirt tucked into a pair of high-waisted pants. And now I don;t know where to go with this sketch...

Ernesto's Dragon

My friend Ernesto suggested I draw him a new tattoo, of a dragon, since he was born in the year of the dragon and this year is also a dragon year in the Chinese zodiac. So these are my thumbnails to try and suss out how it would be placed on his body, and depending on placement, how they would be shaped.

I'm so much happier with the face now, so this is ready—in 4 different outfits (or not)—to upload to Instagram.

Edit: ugh, for the first time ever, I've had my work censored on my posts! They deleted the two full frontal ones, which they've never done before (except in my story when one jumping man's dick looked like an erection). Reports have it that they're on a campaign across other gay accounts...

My eureka moment: his face wasn't working and his hair wasn't working, so I out hair on his face and gave him more hair and he looks contemporary finally! Now I just need to refine his face more.

I like how he looks like it could have been modeled after a real person. He's not necessarily the type of guy I would have cast for this sketch but I often don't have control over how the face evolves as I put the marks down, as I usually react to what looks good on screen as I work. But I am often pleasantly surprised with the results so usually just run with them.

I abandoned the hands-pulling-on-jeans trope—I've done it enough anyhow. Also, what happens is I drew the head a certain way, and like that (it's not even the kind of face I planned, but I'm just running with what's working) so I fixed the figure around it. Now it looks better seated. But he looks like an older guy, or at least an older aesthetic for men. Reminds me of the dark hairedg guy who started out as a good guy but turned out to be a bad guy in Agents of Shield. Him, or Dex Dexter from Dynasty...gah, these old references.

After the first base drawing, now I need to finesse the guy himself and then figure out his darks versus his lights, to make the duotone I'm imagining.

First Friday of 2024

My Fashion Illustration group on Facebook posts work by the members on the First Friday of each month, and I almost never submit old work as is. So I trotted out some of my old Hugo Boss work and fixed parts I thought could be improved , like the proportions of the threads on the guy on the right, as well as some of the linework and ease of the drapes in the pants.

While walking home I got a vision of a man in jeans, in a high chiaroscuro image except done in a turquoise blue against an acid yellow background, where his hair and jeans and outline would fade into blue. This is the body pose to start with

So my dilemma is solved—he's both dressed AND undressed.

I was doodling with a smooth ink brush and drew up this character. I got an image in my head of a man with flowing locks, looking askance, but I'm not sure if it's gonna be a fashion illustration or a nude. Maybe both?

Happy New Year Croquis

Is this indicative of my year to come? I spend the firstt day of the year grading my class, and calculating percentages on a sheet of paper with a terrible hand-drawn croquis. lol
