I was doing a sample demo for a menswear student at FIT last Thursday, and I left teh sketch on my school desktop. I thought I'd bring it home and post it for last Thursday retroactively, but I ended up toying with it and making something newer. So, voila!

I had an idea (since I'm still teaching and teaching trouser flats) to do a top that looks like the top of a pair of pleated pants. The drawing came together rather quickly, although I'm not fond of my finishes so will have to retool asap.

I honestly thought this could first be a Halloween post, then I figured I could always do a Childeless Cat Lad post, then I thought it could be something of a victory post after the elections...but alas, twas not to be any of those. And here he is, almost finished, but with nowhere to be published.

I did some experiments in Illustrator linework, and I'm just gonna post this. I'm too forlorn to do anything even remotely involved.

I experimented a bit with adding Photoshop patterns and I think it looks rather fun, akin to the stuff Cecilia Carlstedt is doing albeit still rawer and more amateur in this style.

Vote 2024

I had made a Vote drawing back in 2020 and instead of uploading my new Childess Cat Lad nude I'd been working on, I thought it best to post a Vote drawing again. I was going to just do a Flashback post and repost the older one, but in the end I couldn't leave well enough alone and had to tinker with the drawing until it was completely different...only Michael J Hildebrandt's Vote design is the same at this point! Keeping my fingers crossed and hoping for the best.

I'm really not satisfied with the body—it's a bit hard to figure out how to angle his arms to accommodate a cat...which I am trying to imagine as a form but decided it was best to suggest one as a mass than figure out all its anatomy as well!

Last year I had a series of super successful (as in over 1000 likes each) Halloween themed nudes. I'd love to get back some of that engagement again as I have barely hit more than 600 likes nowadays, So this year Ill go back to my trusty cat inks.

Now it's just the arms because I changed his face to hide Ernesto's identity since it's full frontal. I changed quite a bit, actually, since I wasn't following some parts, I gave myself full reign with others.

It's really subtle but I changed the shaping of his arms, shoulders and lats. I often go through such minimal (at least visually) changes, until you compare teh previous versions side by side. All in the name of getting it ready to post on Instagram.

I was trying to draw a guy next to another  where the one would be in a suit and more respectable kind of clothing. I never got to his suit but did get his face up.

I didn't like the pink guy's body, I wanted more of a stocky muscle daddy so I redrew him, even the parts that wouldn't be seen. Well, I wonder sometimes if you can call it drawing since it feels like carving, as I use the lasso tool in Photoshop, to make these shapes.

This whole current (and currently waning) style of drawing that is reminiscent of Mattise's cutouts has mad very simple popular art ubiquitous when a store wants to look "millennial". One such nail salon near me on my street (in the former nutrition store manned by my friend and one time model Scott) Has a very simple framed piece with a pink, snake-like shape in the center. I always wanted to try my hand at that style because it would be too easy, and I never had an idea of how. This popped into my head and quickly on to my digital canvas, and I think it's too easy not to do a series.

I love walking poses because you have a dynamic showing of both the body as well as an emphasis on pants/legs. I usually do a side view but this is another favorite angle, and I always struggle to get it right because the arms swing in opposition to their opposite leg.

These drawings were actually done after the fact, retroactively. My computer was having shut-down issues wouldn't start up and I had to go the entire weekend with it in the shop. Yesterday when I was working on the croquis, I had a few more realized versions that got lost without getting backed up so starting from here until Monday are all retro-fitted sketches.

New Croquis

I've been wanting to develop a newer croquis style for myself, as I feel like I'm just reacting to everyone else and the school, but not really doing my own art like when I've got more time. I thought maybe something with more movement, but I realize, hah, I've done this exact same pose before, and almost a decade ago...

Standalone, Rescaled

I published my sketch as it was yesterday, but after seeing it in Instagram's layout I resized and jiggered the head and feet—I have a tendency to draw big feet, I dunno why...although I have to fight to not make my hands too small, haha. They're errrry subtle changes but something I needed to do for my own perfectionist peace of mind. Too bad I can't change it on Insta without losing the previous post.

I decided to just do the kind of guy I normally do instead of trying someone new—so in the vein of Kiko Henriques, or some hot guy with cirly hair. I thought I did the body well, but I have my doubts about his feet—are they a bit too big?

This new brush is inspiring a new way to draw, but I haven't gotten my bearings with it yet. It does a color variation thing that i wasn't expecting, and I have yet to find my way with that technique. Like, I'm not loving this man's face since I'm doing a heavy shadow technique because of this brush, so I need to test it out more...

I decided to add a oversized suit for the students to install patterns in. The exercise is to use Photoshop and create perfectly repeating patterns that tile seamlessly, then apply them to a garment. They have to make sure they try and approximate the direction of the fabric grain, as well as warp the print when  folds happen.

I work with this croquis a lot with my students, as I give them the full file and allow them to work with it. For this class, I changed the shape of the garment a little and added a new top from last year's Vivienne Westwood-inspired one because I wasn't feeling the bustier as much.

I was reading my friend fashion illustration legend Steven Stipleman's 4th edition of his Fashion Illustration book, and noticed he was advocating 10 headed croquis. I suddenly wondered if Id been drawing them wrong all this time at 9 heads. So I drew a comparison. I think I like 9 heads better for now.
