Gouache Face

I saw some artwork online and thought, I want to try that sorta naive gouache painted drawing style. Hmm, not sure it's working for me just yet.

Walk In Pink 3

 Well, I think I figured out a position change that makes sense. And now I'm considering adding clothing.

Playing with the pose more, but still not sure. To get his penis in view, his right leg has to be forward, but that would also mean his right arm should come forward in opposition, and that could block the crotch view. But moving them away changes the walk idea. Hmmm... need to figure this out.

Darrell and a Sweater

I saw a photo online of a guy in a speedo with a sweater tied around his shoulders, and I thought of a pose where the guy is nude and the sweater sleeves just barely hide his groin, as a photo idea for my online friend Darrell. This is the 3 minute sketch I sent him.

Trilevel Layout

Was inspired by a photo spread where they did that graphic layout of layering a photo over a photo, but the underlying shot had a canvas behind the model, so it looked like a third photo, so I though, I could do a drawing like that. This is the test sketch.

Walk In Pink

With the painting style from my post yesterday, I'm thinking how my own linework can be updated with backgrounds like the Keefer sketches had. This was one simple pose that popped into my head, although not sure I like it now that I've drawn it. I also did this sketch without erasing or undoing, so all my marks are on it, it was an interesting exercise in seeing how accurately I can lay down my anatomical knowledge.

Anyhow, the background would have pink in it.

John's Legs and Scrunchy Socks

I've been thinking of doing a sketch based on scrunchy socks, so I did this quick sketch as a suggestion to a possible mode, John...but now I'm wondering if this should be the finished thing?

Keefer, Done

OMG, I kinda got inspired and kept going! So much so that I decided to do a diptych and do two sketches for this "Serra" sweater of Joey's. I keep wondering if I'm channeling Cecilia, but I feel like it's my own take even if I'm inspired by her often collage-y take on illustration.

I decided to go back and finally address this drawing I promised my friend Joey Keefer, for his nascent brand under his own name. I was originally going to do him with crossed arms to show the contrasts of the sweater sleeves, but I'm just skrtching away and not going to the original plan.

Smoking Suit 3

I thought I'd drag this guy out and finalize him, but I seem to have lost the ardor I had for this sketch from the first time around. I wonder if it's because I've moved beyond this level of draftsmanship a bit with my faces? Anyhow, I was having difficulty with his pose in his suit, so I ultimately stripped him to draw the body underneath and then plan on redrawing the suit over that. Although after I drew the torso, I kinda want to keep him at least half naked!

Snakey 2

As per usual, I couldn't resist tinkering with the guy's face, although I'm still not 100% sure I even want to finish this piece. Guess he's just a doodle for now.

I wasn't even thinking. I was putting down marks in hopes of a strike. This guy's...enh...more like I still need to hit a few more pins (to make it a bowling metaphor). But I like his snakey silhouette.

I'm not really drawing actual clothing but I suppose I'm setting scenese. I dunno if that's backward or not. One would think I'd let the clothes do the talking...

Snear 34, Done

Spoke too soon!  After I published it, I noticed some anatomical discrepancies and decided to fix them for the final prints. Fixed the neck muscles.

Aaaand done! I finally got it published on IG after I showed the earlier results to Ernesto as his birthday gift, since it's his birthday today. All in all I'm happy with how this turned out, even if it took 7 years of vacillating on it!

And I think he's pretty much done? Just need to sort out a background for this. I don't think a solid color is gonna cut it.

I wanted to start drawing my figures for my In Store series.

After Gaetan & A Random Painting

Keeping the mood of Gaetan Buca's work, I was also inspired by the placements of black marks in this painting in situ in a pic I found on Instagram. It's funny that such random abstracts would inspire my more figurative work, but it does.

I recently discovered the photography of Gaetan Buca on Instagram and I was very inspired by his work. He has a mood to his male nudes that is poetic, and it inspired me to explore a more sensitive male nude. This is a portrait but I'll be trying a few nudes.

Sneer 31

Hands are hard when they're fully painted! So much to render and get right, and this is still a WIP. Oy. But I'm enjoying how they look, so much so that I fear it may delay my delivery of this piece if I choose to indulge in painting over delivery.

Pants Swing

I am not drawing for Hugo Boss anymore, I don't think, but I'm still always researching the best ways to sketch and render clothing. This was a quickie of my observation that when your leading leg has landed on the floor and the pants or gown have momentum and especially a drapey fabric, the fabric swings forward.

Dress Appropriately 2

My friends in Manila posted photos of the dinner they were supposed to 'dress up' for in Filipino attire, so I decided to photobomb it with my original sketch, plus a few modifications to make me stand. It's not much, but it IS a bit of drawing. Salingpusa, as we used to say in Manila.

I always knew the hands would be a big deal to do. I could have gone the stylistic route and rendered them more as a suggestion, but apparently I'm trying a full render as well as a new chunkier style this far intoteh drawing. Still, I'm enjoying it.

Back At The Drugstore

I was on my way to the gym when I peaked into my local pharmacy, CVS, and I saw one guy at the counter who had apparently just given his info and turned around to wait for the pharmacist to get his prescription. I liked how he had his hands behind his back, so I made a mental note to remember the pose and draw it later. As I was drawing it I decided that his head and arms and hands were all you see.

Astral Visitor

I had a sleep paralysis episode last week, and I "woke" up in my bed to find this...thing floating right above me. I struggled to move, freaked out a bit by this thing I had never seen before, which was surrounded by the swirly transparent blobs I always see in the dark. I finally was able to move and I slapped at it, but my hand went through it and it disappeared and I 'woke up" again, finding myself in the exact same position in bed, with only the swirly bits still swimming madly around me in the bedroom.

Dress Apppropriately

My friends in Manila are planning a trip to a Filipino heritage Restaurant, and my friend who is very into traditional Filipino culture announced the set dinner date with a "dress appropriately" message, to which I responded with this sketch of me in a traditional Filipina terno.

Super, Done

I'm tempted to detail the shit out of this drawing, but I also have to respect my own style, which is fine in its sketchiness. I did refine his face a bit because in my previews for Instagram posting, they looked wonky close up.

If Superman were born 22 years ago today and was brought up with Instagram and kind of a thirsty ho, I imagine this might be one of the photoshoots he would get into doing. As drawings go, this one just kept happening, from doodle to Do Me, Kal-el! And Kal, not Jonathan, because I'd draw him more lean. This is a young kal who IS lean, but still stockier overall than his son. Maybe it's genetics from Lois' s side of the family. Oh, man, I feel like I'm overthinking this one haha

Lobby Painting

I was looking on Instagram at photos of the Lobby Lounge of chic new hotel 9 Orchard, and the reflections in one of the paintings looked like a black man's face painted with Maori-like facial paint, so I thought I'd try rendering what I 'saw'.
